Since the 2018 rule change here in the states, I keep my quad in VLOS. Back on topic when there were no concrete FAA rules I was able to fly out a mile and was able to follow a transmission power line about a half mile that was on the other side of a few hills. My Mavic was completely out of line of sight. I turned around when the video began to degrade. I tried the same flight later using a Titan amp and was able to go a bit further. Not one of my better moves as a newbie operator in 2017 and shortly after I had a very up close incident with a manned aircraft that happened less than a 100' from my home point. Figured if it can happen up close, flying my quad completely out of sight, wasn't a very good idea.
