I mailed with UPS my Mavic 2 Zoom to a friend in Italy, so I will have it when I go there in August. The Italian customs are asking how much the drone is worth, because they will apply some entry tariff based on its value. The tariffs are stiff, in the order of half its value! I told them that I paid $1200 for it new when I bought it 4 months ago, and that I am guessing that if I sold it now I might get $600 for it. They told me that unless I can 'prove' that, they will charge me based on the original sales value of $1200. Does anyone know what a drone like mine might sell for if I put it on e-Bay or sold it some other way?

Thanks for the tip. I had tried that. Unfortunately I am in Germany and all I get is a German version of e-Bay on which there is nothing on used Mavic 2 Zooms. Only on new.

You should be able to access the UK or US eBay version.

Check the classifieds here in the forums too. I wanna say they sell around a thousand bucks give or take depending on use. You definitely won’t find a used zoom for $600. 1st gen mavic pros are being sold for more than that.

Why not just rent a Mavic when you go there? Seems ludicrous to pay $600+ for an "entry tariff" on a drone.

Or buy one when you get there and then either ship it back to US or sell it before you leave.? You're almost half way to the price of a new drone by paying a $600 tariff.

There's two zooms for sale in the classifieds forum right now and though they have extras, they're asking $1300 and $1400 respectively.

Thanks to everyone for the input. And I agree, making this shipment was a big mistake. UPS office that did the mailing already charged me $365. They assured me, however, that there would be no tariffs to pay on arrival. Obviously they did not know what they were talking about. If I were to then send it back home from Italy, in total I would have paid close to the price of a new Mavic 2 zoom. I hope my experience helps someone else avoid making this mistake!

Those are good ideas, too. Not sure if they have Best Buy stores in Italy, but he could just buy Mavic 2 Zoom at BB and then return it (within 14 days) for a full refund. Keep the $600 tariff money in his pocket.

Wait, did you buy the drone and the seller sent it to your friend in Italy or did you have the drone already and send it (for whatever reason) to your friend to have it in holiday?
If you buy a drone outside of the EU member states or any country without special free-trade agreement, you have to pay tariffs (not so much) and import purchase tax (as you have it bought in a 3rd country). If the drone already belonged to you, why sending it off? Take it with you upon travelling.

Whatever UPS told you, it was wrong,
You could have been lucky that your parcel sneaks through, but people working at the Customs are not dumb - even when most think they are. They are experienced and know most of the important stuff quite well.

Hope you get it sorted without too much additonal payment.

I bought the drone at home in the US. Then I used it for about 4 months. Then I decided to take it with me to Italy. Since my luggage was very full and before going to Italy I will be biking a lot in Germany, Croatia and Turkey, I decided to ship the drone to Italy, where I have a friend, so as not to carry it with me all over and possibly damage it, as handling of luggage by airlines and hotels is often rough... Anyhow, I won't be doing anything like this again! I obviously made a big mistake and grossly underestimated the cost and headaches associated with UPS and with the Italian customs. UPS also gave me wrong information about the way this would all work. They told me that since it was my (used) drone, there would be no tariffs to pay.

I guess you figured out already, that your idea, as good as it sounds on paper, was a financially expensive one ...
You cannot simply ship goods to other countries and expect people to believe, that you didn't sell them and they still belong to you months before using again. They have to think, you exported them.

I hope you somehow manage to withdraw from it with less costs, but always, always, always take your valuable items with your carry-on luggage. It still would be a lot cheaper to pay for another bag than to send it.

I certainly understand your intention. Wish you luck mate!

That shouldn’t be so difficult to find out. Just go on eBay and see what they’re selling for as used.

If it's your personal property, I believe you can apply for a refund of the tariff once you return home. Might want to check into that.

I purchased a used zoom for 1,055 including shipping, an extra battery, DJI bag, and SD card with the original owners vacation video/photos

Ever see SNL skit on the pawn shop of sentimental value wherein beat up teddy bear with ear bitten off by older brother sells for $1,000? I'm thinking of selling the original owners vacation video/photos...just kidding.

Speaking of SNL, Dan Akroyd's movie Trading Places had a scene wherein, because of desperation, Dan' character tried to pawn his special elite Rolex watch, an uninterested the pawn shop owner stated, "In Philadelphia, it's worth fifty bucks."

And, so, I guess it depends.
