If I purchase the cellular version is it going to bug me to input a sim card constantly? Can I get rid of that?
I am buying a used one on ebay no sim card.why would you want to remove the Sim card.
They do not make a mini though with GPSNope, you can buy a cellular iPad which has GPS in it, you do not need to activate the cellular function, make sure you look at the DJI recommended list, You can look on msingers www.phantomhelp.com, the specific link is Best Tablets and Phones for DJI GO (Updated Daily) - Phantom Help
Yes, they do. The cellular version has GPS.They do not make a mini though with GPS
Right, but you need a sim card and you have to pay monthly.Yes, they do. The cellular version has GPS.
Nope. Apparently, you don't need to activate the cellular functionality at all, just use it without a sim installed/activated. The GS functionality is independent of the cellular functionality, it is just that the only models to contain GPS are the ones that also have the cellular...Right, but you need a sim card and you have to pay monthly.
Unless I am completely misunderstanding.... Msinger said that was not the case. THe drone itself has GPS, but the ipad mini 4 does not.Nope. Okay now I'm confused beyond belief (this is one reason I despise apple products).I ran my mini 4 without a sim card and gps worked fine.
OK, so I'll try to make it more clear:Okay now I'm confused beyond belief (this is one reason I despise apple products).
From my extensive research and talking with other members on this sub I was made to believe you need a sim card for cellular service along with gps. When I called Verizon they said it is $10 a month to add for cellular service, but you are telling me I need no sim card in my MINI 4 (not iPad 4, mini 4) to use gps features in djigo?
OK, so I'll try to make it more clear:
There are two iPad mini 4 models
It just so happens that the ipad mini 4 WiFi does not have a GPS, and the ipad mini4 WiFi + Cellular does have GPS.
So, if you want to have an ipad mini 4 with a GPS module so you can use the functions of the Mavic that require the RC to have a GPS, you need to have the iPad mini 4 WifI + cellular.
If you use the iPad mini 4 WiFi + cellular, the GPS functions work, regardless whether you activate the sim/cellular functionalities.
So when this is clear, it is time to confuse you again:
It is perfectly possible to fly the mavic using a non-cellular and non-GPS device. The results are:
If you buy the WiFi + Cellular device, but don't activate the cellular stuff, then:
- The app will not show the map overlay when flying out of range of a WiFi internet point (it will show you the route you are flying though, just without a map as background)
BUT: if you set the ipad to connect to personal hotspot (like your phone) that does have internet access, this is solved.
- You can not set the homepoint to the controller location (as this requires the app to know the GPS position of the controller, based on the GPS location of your device)
- You can not use active GPS track functionality, where the Mavic follows the controller based on the device's GPS position
And lastly, if you buy the WiFi + Cellular device AND you activate the cellular with a simcard and a dataplan, then all three issues will function.
- The app will not show the map overlay when flying out of range of a WiFi internet point (it will show you the route you are flying though, just without a map as background)

I hope this clarifies it, can't make it any clearer!![]()
For $10 a month I'll pass.Just have the thing activated and Call it a day.
