Ipad 9.7 or mini 4??

The GPS component resides on the drone. Whether or not the phone/tablet is GPS enabled makes no difference.

It does if you require an updated home point (like on a boat) and/or fast accurate follow me. The external unit provides 10 times faster update of position than conventional gps chipsets on mobile devices.

Never thought of gps as my mini 4 has it built in, is it a necessity?? If so my new 9.7 is still sealed and its getting returned

This unit is best suited to a device with no gps, but will be an improvement over any existing one in said device/tablet/phone. For the dynamic home point, resetting of home point, and follow me (not the active track) to work it needs to know where you are. This GLO device updates my position up to 10 times a second, great when your on a boat and you certainly don’t want it to go to the last home point if it’s where you took off. 99 bucks on Amazon.

Yeah that’s was my understanding just threw me seeing the Bluetooth gps unit in the comment above

I wasn’t 100% correct, sorry. If you think you will need the two capabilities (follow me and dynamic home point) that @Niblett mentioned then you will have to use a GPS enabled device.

I agree with that description of the MavMount but, when I upgraded from a Mini4 to the iPad 2018, the extra weight caused the tablet to pivot too easily. So, I ordered a larger threaded thumbwheel from B&H and now I can get it tight enough to hold the tablet in place and it stays in position even when wearing a harness and letting the controller/tablet hang freely. I hope the folks at MavMount switch to a larger thumbwheel.

Before inserting the mav mount into the controller. Tighten the knob as much as you can (you can loosen the knob assembly and turn the knob so it is hanging out past the mount and then really tighten it). Now attach the tablet mount as tight as you can without using the wheel (tighten the thumbwheel to the bottom). Now loosen the knob and adjust to wherever you want the tablet and mount. It will NOT come loose!

That was my method as well, and as I use the lanyard (an optional extra), my 9.7 iPad has stayed where I wanted for the year or so I've had that setup. It also folds nicely for my carrying case (an older Tamarac camera bag).

If you are going to buy a 9.7 then you are better off getting the 10.5. Same size... more screen.

Exept the 9.7 are way cheaper.

The question is how big do you really need the screen to be? Surely it's the quality of the end product (the photos and videos) that's important. I've had a couple of flights since changing from a Galaxy S7 to a 9.7" iPad Pro and my initial impression is that the iPad screen is bigger (and heavier) than it needs to be. The S7 is a bit smaller than I would prefer - I want something in between TBH.

IMHO you don't need a big screen to position the drone and preview what you're going to achieve photographically. This is why so many people prefer the iPad Mini and why I'll probably go with the Mini 5 when it is released early next year. It will be a lot lighter and won't need to be mounted on a third party Pad Holder. Simple and elegant.

TheAlien: Did all that numerous times and could not get it tight enough but the bigger thumbwheel solved the problem.

MHO you don't need a big screen to position the drone and preview what you're going to achieve photographically.

I am a believer in do whatever works for you!! I have posted this in a couple of other discussions regarding the same problem of the loosening mount. So far everyone that has tried this method, it has worked for, except for you. I am glad you found a solution that works for you
