Is a DJI Mavic 2 Pro a dodo

It was easy before, but with newer firmware DJI has made it more difficult.
I’ve never had any trouble.
Can’t explain it any better than the video does.
It takes me about 6-7 minutes.
But in truth I primarily use the Pro camera sis de the quality is so much better so I seldom use the zoom anymore. In fact it’s available for sale.
For zoom I just get out the MP3.
And while I do have the MP3, I fly my MP2 far more often. mostly because DJI often does not unlock geo zones in certain areas even when I have Laanc approval. But the u lock key for the MP2 from DroneHacks resolves that issue. And there is no key available yet for purchase for the MP3.

I have the 2Pro.......it's all about the sensor.
I have a 14MP Pentax DSLR, and have blown up pictures to 2x3 feet, with excellent results. I've done the same with 2Pro pictures. You can't do that with a 48 MP phone picture......the sensor is the discriminator.

Hi Guys,

I am new to this forum so be nice if I miss anything. ;)

Anyways, I have had a DJI Mavic Air 2S for a while now and want to venture into professional drone photography as this seems to be the most lucrative, at least where I live.

My funds are extremely low and I can afford a DJI Mini 4 Pro but I have been looking at the DJI Mavic 2 Pro and although it is much older, and has more restrictions in-place, it seems to be a better drone for photography and I can get it for much less, used than than a Mini 4 Pro.

Is a DJI Mavic 2 Pro a dodo? or is it worth buying it as it has a better lense, variable aperture and much stronger in winds?

Ignoring the restrictions and age. What do you think?

Any opinions would be helpful
My first drone was the MAVIC 2 PRO bought in 2018, eventually I sold it for the Air 2SW solely on the premise that my M2P was long in the tooth. I now own the Mavic 3 Classic, which is great. However, when I look back at my drone photos, I see that the Mavic 2 Pro photos are so much better! I regret getting rid of it.

Welcome to the forum from Northwest New Jersey. I have the Mavic 2 Pro (M2P) and Mini 3 Pro and was a professional photographer until Covid. Now, I am an avid enthusiast of both drones and still photography. Both drones have their place for specific uses. The M2P is my go-to for still photography. The 20 MP Ssensor and ability to control ISO, aperture, and F-Stop are critical for me. The M3P takes nice pictures and can be used internationally. (< 249g). I plan on keeping the M2P for the foreseeable future, using my discretionary money for lenses on my DSLR. In short, all drones will give you nice pictures. Some, like the M2P, allow the photographer to control settings.

Mavic 2 Pro is awesome and, as noted by others, reliable. Purchased mine in 2018 along with two additional batteries, all of which are still performing well. I have the original DJI RM 500 Controller and it, too, is working perfectly.

Yes, a nice feature, but I think the 2 Pro is a better drone if photo quality is important for you.
You could do like me - buy a Pro first, and find a Zoom later for a good price, they are cheaper than the Pro.
The Pro and Zoom share batteries and remote control, they are in fact the same drone except the camera..

I bought a M2Pro back in 2018 I think, and have loved it. Then I bought a backup (used) and have added 2 Zooms as well as a way to stock up on batteries! I have a Mini 3 Pro for when I want a smaller bag to carry, but the Mavic 2 Pro’s are my workhorses. I am intrigued by the Air3S, but I’m sure I still haven’t used all the features on my Mavic 2s yet, so I don’t want to get caught up in a feature race. If you get a Mavic 2 Pro for photography, you won’t regret it. (I had a photography side-business in the 70’s and Hasselblad was my aspiration camera, but I couldn’t afford one. That might have had something to do with my original purchase of the Mavic 2 Pro.)

thats really helpful. thank you

Welcome to the forum, it's a wonderful resource.

I fly the Mavic Mini, the Mavic 2 Zoom, Mavic 3 Pro, and Air 2S.
The 2 Zoom is still a joy to fly and to get great photos/videos for my use.
Thats good to know. I liked the Air 2s for the power in windy conditions and its flexibility. But I am hoping the Mavic 2 Pro although much older with be a better fit for photographs. My big concern though apart from ;) is the older transmission… and I dont want it to fly off ;)

It will not fly off. And if you lose connection it will miss you, and come right back and land at your feet :)
I have never had a Mavic 2 lose connection with my RC - but I do not try to set world record in long distance drone flying...

I have a 2Pro and still love it. The 1" sensor makes all the difference.....a small camera that many of you may have will have a smaller sensor. 48MP couped with the smaller sensor is inferior.
I've blown up a single image from my 2P to 2'X3" and the clarity is EXCEPTIONAL!

I have two M2Ps. One is stock and the second one I modified for full-spectrum images, particularly for creating false-color IR photos for vegetation mapping and analysis. They both create phenomenal images and I use them for work and for hobby photography. I have 6 batteries for them that are still going strong and would not give it up for many reasons, but the main ones are the photo quality and the ability to run Litchi software with them.

The experience of the pilot/photographer is much more important than having the prefect drone. Your experience with still photography is the basis for drone photography, not the best drone.

That is certainly true. With that said
  1. Experience as a pilot is less important in drone photography. The drone is still during capture, so the primary pilot skill that comes into play is not being a dufas and utilizing the obstacle sensors properly. There are of course specialized instances with unique perspectives where it may be important to stick a drone in a tight spot, but you can take your time doing it and inch into place at a very low risk, particularly with today's omni-directional obstacle sensors.
  2. Equipment is more important than in still cameras. Cameras in drones have more tradeoffs to deal with in terms of size, weight, and space, and DJI sometimes makes compromises that are videography centric.
  3. I owned an Air 2S for 3 years and, from what I have seen of still image quality on the Air 3S, I will take the Air 2S any time of day
  4. I would stay away from any "mini" drone for "serious" photography. I own a Mini 3 Pro, and the post processing lattitude of its DNGs pales in comparison to that of the Air 2S. The 250g limit imposes too many compromises on optics and sensors. And the mini 3 and mini 4 series struggle in high winds, which often accompany interesting atmospherics - which is precisely the time you want to fly. To me the "mini" drones are specialty tools for few limited circumstances. I bought my Mini 3 Pro only because someone was selling a LN condition Fly More combo for $400. I use it mostly to scout locations before deploying a Mavic 3 Pro for the "real" images (at the moment I only own 3 Mavic batteries, and I can easily blow through them in an afternoon, plus 4 batteries on the Mini 3 Pro for scouting).
  5. I have never owned the Mavic 2P, but I recently bought the Mavic 3P second hand, and am blown away by what the main sensor can do. This is an image from a few days ago. It was shot at sunrise, into the sun, and is from a single exposure. The mountains were black outlines in the original DNG. I bracketed 7 shots for this comp but discovered that I can bring up the shadows from the middle frame, and after the PS AI denoise the image quality is on par with that of my Nikon Z6. https://bboyanov.com/gallery/upload/2025/02/10/20250210214839-d653f5e0.jpg
  6. If you don't need the zoom lenses, the Air 2S is plenty good for professional quality photography - no need to change drones. The next image is shot with an Air 2S under similarly challenging conditions, with side light where most of the foreground was in a shadows. This too is a single exposure https://bboyanov.com/gallery/upload/2024/01/02/20240102002107-1d9300f9.jpg
  7. The Mavic 3P prices on the second hand market are likely to take a 10-20% dip when the Mavic 4P is released in a few months. I should have waited to buy my M3P but patience has never been a strong suit of mine.
