Lightning connector keeps pulling out

I use an iPhone X and every time I disconnect the phone from the controller, the lightning plug pulls free from the little rectangular plastic piece sitting the tray of the controller. When not plugged in, it sits and slides in the tray just fine.

What gives here?

Most of us remove the rectangular thingy as it does more harm than good (forces on the phone's port among others).

If it's too much of a hassle, you can also connect your phone to the USB port on the bottom of the remote controller with a Lightning cable.
