I am wondering if there is a connection between the way the drone is flown and the risk of it's being lost through the battery being drained or whatever.

I don't think it's causal relationship with how it's flown, I think it's because aircraft that make it to the ground are more likely to be found.

@PhiliusFoggg makes a good point about the screen recorder. Had I thought of it, I could have even screenshotted while the video feed was still up. That would have been so helpful

The verb really ought to be "screenshoot".

"Shot" is the past participle of the present tense "shoot", and the noun for the result. Screenshot, as commonly used, is only a noun, so doesn't actually have a present tense. The consistent construction would be screenshoot though.
