Without a cellular iPad, I wouldn't worry about if I were you. On my mini 4, WiFi only, I close all apps running, but don't put it into airplane mode.
 
Although with data on, map data can load if you forgot to load it ahead of time.
 
and you have the ability to use modes like active track that will allow the Mavic Pro to track the device (you if you are holding the device or its on your person). No Cellular Ipad Mini's do not have this ability.

ActiveTrack does not require GPS data. I guess you're thinking of Follow Me?
 
To clarify: There's GPS and there's cellular data. Cellular iPads have GPS chips in them, but they don't require the cellular data connection for the GPS to work. So, you can be in airplane mode and still take advantage of the GPS functionality.
