And "...benthic communities..." - that's a howler, perhaps he/she thought it sounded more academic than "sea life".
Considering it was an academic paper, it's appropriate for the author to use the correct and specific terminology.

And regarding the idea that strong directional light or specular reflection can cause odd behaviour in drones: this is not without precedent.
There is no shortage of accounts of obstacle avoidance stopping DJI drones when flying towards a low, bright sun.
But that's not what the OA experienced.
Reflected glare from the water's surface is unlikely to have any effect on obstacle avoidance as the light is diffused, rather than concentrated and directional and the drone isn't flying towards the water's surface.

Read through the linked article... "...surface glint..."??? I actually wondered what the hell the writer meant.

Do you think whoever wrote it meant 'specular reflection'?... that well known effect that can be countered or lessened significantly by using a cheap polarising filter.

Here is an explanation of "Benthic community". Not such a "howler" after all as it does specify something specific. ChatGPT - Benthic Community Overview

This forum is about sharing info and helping other Droners, not about trying to point out how much cleverer one is than the next person. Keep that sort of stuff to bookface and the likes. Lets keep it informative here.

Benthic just refers to the marine life on the bottom as opposed to at the surface or in the water column. It's not a pretentious or snooty term. It's definitely not a "howler." My friend Richard, who passed away last year, was a marine biologist who specialized in benthic invertebrates. Most all of us have eaten quite a few of them - shrimp, crabs, clams, ...
