Air 2s Public Airport near my home. G4 airspace No LAANC required. Added Night Shot

Isn't night flight forbidden at any time, anywhere unless you have a written exception from the FAA or in accordance with your 107 license?

ps: did some research and it seems the FAA has relaxed that rule; now there is a clear statement night operations are ok but the drone must be fitted with 3 mile visible anti-collision lights (part 107). And rec fliers need lights that allow orientation and control. Interestingly - I was denied a LANCC clearance for night flight under a local class C zone... essentially ALL night flights were forbidden. Go figure.

Approval of night flights via LAANC system is currently offered only for some airports and by some providers. But there seems to be an option for night operations with a combination of a daylight authorization and the National Authorization which addresses night flights.

Here's a link to the FAA article:

Here's an excerpt:

The following is guidance for requests between April 21, and the Fall of 2021.

Night authorizations at or below the approved altitude in the UAS Facility Maps will consist of two separate authorizations that combined, allow you to fly at night:

  • Daytime authorization (follow the steps outlined above for automated approval).
  • National Authorization (PDF)that extends your daytime authorization to allow night time operations for the date indicated on the LAANC authorization.
    • You do not have to apply for the National Authorization, you can access it here (PDF).
    • The National Authorization is effective only in conjunction with LAANC issued authorizations at or below the Unmanned Aircraft System Facility Map (UASFM) values of the same calendar day.
    • Night time operations that carry over from one calendar day to the next will require separate LAANC daytime authorizations each calendar day.

MS Coast, the 14CFR107.29(d) clearly states that the waiver dated April16, 2021 is <probably> no longer valid. For one, it isn't clear in the posted PDF if the waiver is under 107.200, but, we can assume it <probably> is, .200 seems pretty generic.

(d) After May 17, 2021, no person may operate a small unmanned aircraft system at night in accordance with a certificate of waiver issued prior to April 21, 2021 under § 107.200. The certificates of waiver issued prior to March 16, 2021 under § 107.200 that authorize deviation from § 107.29 terminate on May 17, 2021.

Yes, you're right. Thanks.

And there's no probably; it definitely does rescind the April 16, 2021 waiver. I'm surprised that the FAA has left that waiver and supporting text online after it was rescinded.

By the way, here's the primary source for that CFR - Electronic Code of Federal Regulations (eCFR)

There's a part of me that wants to think since the waiver posted above is not a waiver anyone applied for, i.e., not approved under .200 (b), it is more like a general waiver under .200 (a) and thus not subject to the update in .29.

This is worse than tax code. But, the above waiver reads like it was approved under .200 (a), not (b); but .29 doesn't distinguish the difference when ending ALL waivers prior to... sigh. Way too much like tax code.
