So, how do these supposed "scam" sites scam you if they accept PayPal?

I just came across a site that is selling Mavics for unrealistic prices that seem that they are too good to be true,
but, they accept PayPal.
How would a scam work if they accept PayPal?
The only thing I can think of is if you are scammed, you would still get your money back, but that money would actually come from PayPal and not the scam site. The scam site would still get their money either way. Am I correct in this?

That sounds about right, im trying to sell my surface pro and I get more people trying to have me ship it to them and they will pay over asking price with paypal. I know if it goes through i will get my money but dont want to deal with the BS.

Yes, they could hope to get away with their cash before PayPal takes back the funds. This would depend on timing though, as they would have to hope that you take a while to report the sale as fraudulent.
The PayPal payment process could be totally fake or a "man-in-the-middle" proxy site. That would be even more dangerous for you as they would get your PayPal credentials and then try to clean out your account.

Best thing is to just stay far away rather than depending on PayPal to protect you.

Had that happen on eBay. Cancelled the deal and reported it.

I had the same concern when someone posted about buying from one of these scam sites here although I had a look and the Paypal site looked genuine (certificates matched, it rejected fake logins) and curiously they didn't offer any other payment methods apart from Paypal. There must be some sort of scam they're doing with Paypal themselves, I'd have thought they would ship out a fake product so they could claim to Paypal they had done their part although the person here received nothing.

I fully agree with your recommendation about staying away as I'm alarmed how often people decide to take a chance with what they think is a scam site as they believe their payment method is safe and it's worth the risk.

Actually as a seller it's much harder to prove you're right, Paypal typically sides with the buyer (precisely becasue of more large scale scammy merchants than small scammy buyers) and some take advantage of that.

Unless you have the proof of shipment with the destination address, sometimes even a signed delivery confirmation that noone usually asks for and typically costs a lot from shipping companies you're usually screwed. And even then the "buyer" could say he got the package but fake it as if you shipped him a rock or something, so you'd also need pictures of the package...

Also more simple, they say Paypal initially to get your interest, get you to spend an hour or so preparing the deal, then say "ah i have an issue with my Paypal account, let's use [dodgy method] instead" hoping that you'll fall for it since you invested so much time into it already.

Your biggest problem is in the way the add is structured. All the advitizing and blurb will be on a Mavic Pro, what it can do and all its functions, but right at the end and hidden will be a piture of a one of the small cheap copies like an Eachine 58 or similar that looks like a Mavic. This is what will be sent to you.
Something you can normally buy for 40 or 50 bucks but charge you 80 to 130 You think you are getting or paying for $1000 drone.
They get away with it at PayPal as they have fulfilled their side of deal and sent you the item you paid for in the deal even though you were duped into what it actually was. You just overlooked the minor detail as your brain could only see all the advertising on the expensive Mavic Pro.
If they suck in 50 people a day that's 2500 profit.

So, I was actually going to go through with it and actually place an order. Not because I thought it was legit and I was actually going to get what is advertised but to actually document every step to produce a video on how these scams work. Sure enough, when I got to the checkout page, the only payment method was credit card. PayPal method was nowhere to be found, even though it states elsewhere that they do accept PayPal. I guess there's no point in producing my awesome video .

credit card is a good way to pay your very protected, probably better then with paypal.
