Hello Everyone ...

I am in need of purchase advice/recommendations, for a project I am about to start ...

To begin with, I am a Live Event Producer. My daily routine involves work inside large-scale arenas (where you might go to see a basketball game, concert, etc.), and stadiums & other outdoor venues (on a much less frequent basis). As part of my job, I regularly interact with TV & other crews, in determining camera setup locations in such venues. Not long ago, I purchased a non-DJI drone for my grandson, and was helping him learn to control it, when an idea came to mind.

Normally, in a given venue, I would walk around all seating levels, to visually determine the best spots for camera locations. But, as I'm sure many of you know, these venues are massive; just moving from one side to another (and points in between), coupled with moving from level to level, can take several hours in total (and, even though I don't like to admit it, I'm not as young as I used to be). The idea that came to mind when I was working with my grandson's drone, was to purchase a higher quality DJI model, then use it to do the legwork, so to speak. The idea would be to send the drone up to potential camera locations, so I could evaluate placement viability (view angle, possible view obstructions, etc.), while I stay on the venue floor to control it.

As this is a specific use scenario, I was hoping that some of you could advise, as to which DJI model, and control applications (iOS or Android; I use both) might be the best options. A short list of requirements for potential models would be as follows:

Ability to operate almost entirely indoors (massive buildings though; no GPS in arenas, GPS assistance in stadiums & other outdoor venues)
Camera ability to shoot both stills & video
Camera ability to lock focus on an object/person, then move around, while maintaining that focus lock
Collision avoidance (for obvious reasons)
Good quality camera (not for event use footage, but rather for me to look at, to help determine camera placements)

It is important to note that no matter what model I select in the end, at no time will it be operating in an entirely autonomous fashion. While I would like to be able to "program" flights to sweep around venue levels, I would still not let it operate entirely on its own (mainly for safety reasons) ...

In the research that I have done so far, the DJI Mavic Air model has come up quite a bit, as a possible selection. But before I actually go to make a purchase, I really wanted to get some advice/recommendations from people, who know what they are doing, when it comes to operating drones.

That's about it ... Thank you all in advance for your assistance.

Have a great day!

Mavic Air might well work. You would have to fly in ATTI mode without gps, and would likely be safest taking off from a “landing pad” in the center of the arena since you’ll need a safe way to land. Recommend just practicing takeoff an landing first as well as trying th find a takeoff point without any ferrous metals near (Rec at least 10 feet distance). Platform of some type?
Overall best, though, I think would be Mavic 2 (zoom version is less costly) due to the incredible 360 degree set of sensors to help prevent inadvertent collision with structural components of the venues.
Just my $0.02, let’s see what others say.

I would choose an Inspire 2 with X5S camera because:

Ability to operate almost entirely indoors (massive buildings though; no GPS in arenas,
You can manually select ATTI mode on the remote controller. This mode is essential to be used in areas without GPS coverage as you described.
Note: you have to practice a lot to get comfortable and perform safe flights in ATTI mode.

Camera ability to shoot both stills & video
High quality images or footage can be aquired with an Inspire 2 and X5S

Camera ability to lock focus on an object/person, then move around, while maintaining that focus lock
Can be done with so called Intelligent flight modes. It has its limitations, such as the object must be close enough for the camera to track the object.

Collision avoidance (for obvious reasons)
Yes, Inspire 2 has collision avoidance. The aircraft can detect obstacles in the front, downward and upward direction while flying.

Good quality camera
The X5S is used in production environments and delivers high quailty images and footage.
You can change lenses (from wide angle to telephoto focal lengths)

The Inspire 2 is a high quality aircraft, but comes at a price.
And of course, with every aircraft or UAV, you have to practice to get used to it. Especially what you want to do in a difficult (no GPS) environment.

Good luck

Get a FAA 107 license too, then you will be legal as you are wanting to fly for work related purposes. Its fairly easy to get.

Sounds like a great idea. I suggest possibly a Mavic 2 Zoom as you said you are doing camera viewpoints and not production work with it. The zoom will let you get better image details than the wide angle M2P, and camera compatible views from the images of the stage.

Almost all the DJI drones meet your criteria. It’s really just a matter of how good of a camera do you need and how much you want to pay.

The Mavic 2 Pro is easily your best cost/quality/portability ratio. It has a very good camera in fact just today I was flying and a camera crew shooting a promotional video for a well known ski company rolled up and they were using a Mavic 2 Pro even though they had an Insipre in a case going unused. I asked why they weren’t using the Inspire and they told me being that it’s a $10000 drone they end up using the Mavic 2 Pro more because it’s smaller to get shots in tight spaces and frankly they are less nervous flying it and the video is respectable from the Mavic 2 Pro.

If you need production level quaity then the Inspire is a flying mini cinema camera.

For a 1000 bucks the mav air fly more combo will do what you want. If you just want to get decent picture and video for a decent price the Air is you baby. If you want to spend more like 1500 or 2k well thats up to you But the Mavic Air will work just fine for your needs. My 2 cents

Thanks for the great advice everyone ... I think I'm going to look more seriously at the Mavic 2 Zoom & Pro models, as it sounds like both of them would suit my needs pretty well

Update:

In the end, I decided to go with the Mavic Pro 2, which I purchased this week from Sure RC on Amazon (with the Fly More option). The omni-directional obstacle sensing ability, combined with the awesome low-light performance of the Hasselblad camera were the big selling points for me. After visiting a local RC club, and actually seeing the Mavic Pro 2 in action, I was sold.

In the days leading up to purchase and delivery, I watched countless setup, operation videos on Youtube. Once the package arrived, I resisted the urge to simply tear everything open, run outside, and try to fly it. Instead, I spent the first day doing all of the setup & compass, sensor calibrations, etc. When I finally took it up for the first time the next day, I was awe-struck by how easy it was to control. Already having experience with non-DJI drones, I was comfortable operating the Mavic Pro 2 with Beginner Mode off on the 2nd day.

Oddly enough, my wife was also impressed enough with my operation of the aircraft, that she immediately told me to send it up to the roof of our house, and inspect the chimney (she heard some noise, and though it was birds or squirrels, setting up a nest). Manually, it took me about a minute to send it up, circle the chimney twice (with video recording), and bring it back down. Not exactly what I had planned to use it for, but a quick & easy assignment nonetheless ...

Thanks again everyone for your advice & suggestions. I have more questions, but I'll post those separately ...
