If receiving a brand new bird and first initializing, and it tells you to update to new FW right off the bat....do you have to? ...and should you?

You don't have to do it. You should, unless you see many posts on the forum that might suggest issues. Usually if the firmware has been out for a few weeks any issues will be worked out.

Mind as well do it to keep all your **** up to date. What if something happened and you could have prevented it with the update?

Mainly concerned about some of the horror story's I've read from mishaps after fw updates....but in particular the added restrictions of height, distance, and DJI adding its own NFZ's or more of them? Maybe I misunderstood?
