We keep losing ground because of idiots with drones

Our town has a RC club flying field within a mile from Hemet/Ryan air tanker base and general aviation airport. It is still open, and even though I’ve flown my balsa and mylar super cub model there, I would not fly my M2P, even with giving notice and getting approval from the airport, Its just too close and public for comfort.

Does the RC club not have a standing arrangement with the airports?

Yes- they’ve been there for decades, too, even when the base had both CDF and Forest Service use- its a bit less used now that FS moved to a nearby AFB, and the RC club still operates without issues (still). They do have good security there, and only club members can use it.

I've flown RC models on RAF and civvy airfields for over sixty years all around the world. Most air force camps had (have) model clubs on them and are quite happy for club members to fly when the airfield proper is not active. Any time I was on QRA (quick readiness alert) in the middle east I would make sure that I was on duty at the same time as our model flying pilots and we would all leg it to the jets together if we had a shout. As long as people are sensible it works fine, but it only takes one tosser to screw it all up!
