Practice, lots of crashes, being able to build and repair your own gear.
He's been doing so with FPV for 10 years.

Seems to be all home / custom builds (youtube descriptions, channel page, about page, etc)
Some awesome other FPV drones on there.
The guy (?) says LOS, but uses fatshark goggles, guess they mean it's visible from the point he's flying from.

Lots of parts and gear mentioned in the various video descriptions.

I would be willing to bet that there will be a lot more DIY UAV guys out there after the FAA puts UID into effect. I think I'd want to build my own and the new rules would probably push me off the fence when that happens.
