Hi there! New owner of the Mini 2 and just wanted to introduce myself to you all. First time droner, but have flown r/c helicopter before, albeit years ago. Looking forward to getting up into the skies and seeing what the M2 can do. ? Aside from starting in an open field, away from buildings and trees, any insights to what I might be getting into? I would mainly be using as a recreational hobbyist ? Would it be necessary to file as a flier with the FAA here in CA? Thanks!

Hello from the Hoosier Heartland abagustinalong.

Would it be necessary to file as a flier with the FAA here in CA?

Since you have the M2, probably not.

California hasn't become it's own Country yet so the FAA says NO on registration of a drone less than 250 grams.

If you add stuff to it (prop guards, strobes, etc.) that affect the weight, then maybe you'll have to register.

Whether you do or don't, it's only five dollars to register.

Good luck and welcome to the Forum. ?

Here are some things to help you get started with your Mini 2:
  • The current Mini 2 manual can be downloaded here (it doesn't come in the box). Other important documents can be found on the Mini 2 downloads page.

  • Check out this getting started guide for some tips not found in the Mini 2 manual.

  • This video covers all the basics of the Mini 2.

  • Your drone batteries will last longer if you use and maintain them like this.

  • Practice flying outdoors in a wide open location that's free of all obstacles. Don't attempt to fly inside your house or in other confined locations.

  • The drone records flight data each time you fly. You can decrypt and view those flight logs with these tools.

  • Check out MavicHelp.com for commonly used accessories you might need.

Welcome to the forum!

I’ve flown around Napa and Sonoma a few times in the last year. Make sure you check the airspace with an app like Kittyhawk, because the Napa Airport has flight restrictions that include the scenic overlook on the south end.

You can pretty much park on the side of the road for views of the vast vineyards, and their elaborate buildings and occasional castles. Downtown Napa is best flown from across the river, from the parks along Soscol Avenue. Heading north past Saint Helena finds the valley getting tighter, so you’ll have an iconic view of the Napa Valley and its surrounding hills.

Aloha and safe flying to you in 2021!
