No fly over people and cars, right?

So many aircraft are crashing down into neighborhoods these days.

Actually, it's "continous flight over people or moving vehicles" you can legally transverse over moving traffic and people to get from point A to point B

Being an old cynic i wonder if this could be a publicity stunt by amazon to stop those who are against deliveries by drone from using drone safety as a weapon against the company?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but as I read your comment, I would have to say No way! That would be devastating to themselves.

As i said i am an old cynic, this probable wasn't planned but it wont have done them any harm either -

The drone landed safely and they went on to explain it has built in technology to make sure if it detects a problem it will automatically pick a safe place and land, they are saying all the right things at a time when this method of local delivery is likely to take off.
(sorry couldn't resist).

They called it a “Crash landing”?! 🤣 It looked pretty well done to me, and they even deliver packages just like the delivery people do - With a “Yeet!” of more than 5-feet from where they are standing!

"OH Hi Amazon recovery team!....Your Drone crash landed in my yard?.. No Problem you'll just need to pay a "small" key rental fee, and there will also be a mushed grass fee if you need to step on the lawn." Go right ahead.
P.S. Instead of taking pictures I would have climbed under it and waited for my att...I mean the authorities!

The thing looked around for an open clear spot to set down and then I'm sure notified the base (Amazon) of it's location coordinates. So what's the problem? It sounds like it did exactly what it was supposed to in the event of a problem. It's obvious by the video that it didn't "crash". It simply set down there and tipped slightly to the side. Typical media trying to make something out of nothing.

I don't know America law on the subject so can I ask how the company stands legally if the drone lands on your property.

If a drone is no different than a manned aircraft then what happens when a small plan decides make an emergency landing on your neighborhood street?

Do any of you plan for an emergency? We should. I try to scope out a few spots where I could land emergently and be able to retrieve my drone on most of my flights. Few of us could do it as flawlessly as this Amazon drone did.

If an aircraft landed in our streets there wouldn't be anything left of use to the owners.

What i was trying to ascertain is do you have laws where if something is on your property without permission you keep it or they have to pay for its return etc.

Some of the places I've lived, it wouldn't get a chance to land ... the buggers'd have the wheel nuts off a moving Lamborghini. Three hours later you'd have someone knocking your door asking if you wanted to buy a set of white prop blades.

We do not have such laws although I would imagine in some rural parts of the country, land owners might believe it.

I wonder how long it'll be before one of their drones gets into trouble cannot land safely and hits a person or property i can imagine the pay-outs would be huge.

It would be nice BUT You can't keep it. You must do your best to contact the owner or the authorities. Some people think that if the Post office delivers something you didnt order to your address that they can keep the item. That's theft and the item must be returned or paid for. Now if they must access your property to get their lost drone, Well...there is nothing in the law that says they have free and unfettered access to trespass on your land.. You can even charge them a fee if you like. but it can't be ridiculous or a judge will throw it out.
I really wouldnt charge them I suppose, but it would be fun to make the Recovery team sit thru a "safety meeting" before they were allowed access to the property..Maybe even make them wear protective gear, like some chemical resistant animal costumes.maybe tie a balloon to ya so I can keep track of you. You know for Safety.
EDIT: Here is what I envision for the endurance portion of the safety class:

I bet Amazon Drones will be "trophies" for some.
