Oh heck no!
The moment you make any kind of connection it starts transmitting all the stored data.

It sends a lot of stuff to China.

All your flight data
Sim Chip Tel number
Photos and possibly Video slices.
Your firmware / App info.
Apps installed on your device (according to one data monitor)
Crash and error detection info.
Activity with other online services like YouTube.
YouTube and Facebook login info if you have it setup.

That's on top of all the other info they typically have like

Full Name
Credit Card info
Your Address

You use their service and they collect your personal data (your daily activity) without letting you know. And turn around selling it without share to the owners.....

ok this is ridiculous, every one sell your DJI products and buy Little Hubans and just use in a gym..............truth there is nothing you can do about it here, and ive not seen any code thats differs than every smart phone or credit card company thats any different, so sell your drones. and stop this discussion, you scare all the noobs that might want to buy a drone, this thread is just as bad as the firmware hacks, but instead of us hacking.......witch by the way is bull.... You seem to be pretty careless for someone who's all that concerned about privacy.. providing your actual CC, linking apps to FB/YT.. you're giving them all your data on a silver plate. If you check the permissions for a lot of the apps you have on your phone (I assume) you will be surprised what they have access to, some without any reason at all.

And the fact that the company is based in China... not like the NSA doesn't already have all the data anyway already but I'm sure they would never ever use it against you..

I'm not saying what they do is is any way OK but it's also in no way surprising or exceptional... I chose to accept it as a fact of using modern technology, I am an insignificant pawn so it's not like they'll get any useful intelligence from my account anyway...

please sell your drone, ill by it cheap.......ill be long dead before china uses any of my info

No one said that DJI is only one doing that, but this is Mavic forum and thats why we are discussing DJI here, Facebook, Google and others have their own sins but discussing them here would be complete off-topic.
Sadly we can't even talk about blocking the personal data collection or thread gets closed...

Cruzroy there is a big difference between when you give Sears or BestBuy your credit card info and personal data vs DJI. For one thing data held by DJI is held in China and secondly if they are hacked you likely wont be getting any great settlement from them. If they have a breach like the ones that are so common these days and they say 50,000 clients info was stolen I doubt you will hear anything from DJI except sorry and if it goes further they will just close down their US operations. That's why I paid for my Mavic using PayPal.

Your biggest mistake is comparing the activities of American companies with ones in China. I have dealt with Chinese companies for almost 20 years and I can tell you they don't give a flying * if you get shafted. They actually find it very amusing when the Obnoxious know it all westerners get shafted. On the other hand when a American company gets caught they end up in all sorts of hot water. Not so in China, only on very rare occasions.

I know half of you are too young to remember the great Baby formula murders in China.
A major powdered Baby Milk manufacturing and distribution plant run by Chinese business men decided that in order to make some extra cash they could change the ingredients in the powdered milk to include Melamine. By adding Melamine it would make the Milk pass all the Chinese required minimal nutritional standards without them having to add expensive ingredients. Well Melamine is well known to be very toxic but it did not stop them for a second.

Even when the first signs of problems broke out they still continued to manufacturing the milk and making the profits. As the figures climbed to over 50,000 babies hospitalized and I think near a dozen dead the government tracked down the source and shut down production. In the end something like 250,0000 babies had permanent kidney damage and they found another dozen or so other baby product companies in China had also used Melamine in their baby food so as to pass nutritional standards.

The point of all of this is that if several companies in China are willing to deliberately poison babies in their own country for profit, what makes you think they care about you or your data or anything that happens in America. I have found that over the years that almost every Chinese company our company has dealt with, had no problems shafting us royally if we did not check everything.

I chalk it up to being a cultural thing.

They are adding restrictions because they are trying to cover their rears against possible future regulations.

If the Mav2 is anything like I imagine it's going to be, I doubt that the sales will be anything nearly as spectacular as the mav1. I certainly would not have bought my Mavic if it had all the current restrictions!

As for selling it, no need since I have been able to preserve it in its original state. If that changes it becomes pretty much useless to me. I like to travel and film interesting locations, the last thing I need is a 2 hour drive to then find out my drone won't lift off.

According to one of their tech, we talked about Litchi when he saw me flying with Google goggle + Litchi in HK, they are using Litchi as they used GoPro a while ago.

which is why i brought both of mine on someone elses credit card Russian one let the commies steal from the commies thats what i say

as for data collection on flights DJI have everyone so locked down that mapping the world is impossible, with most people they will not be able to map more than a few blades of grass in peoples back gardens as no one can fly them except the lucky few who are using and have access to other ways.

they are welcome to all my porn videos made with my mavic DSLR iphone etc as i think for a very ugly bloke i do make a bloody good movie and i know the Chinese love a proper film as they are not allowed to make any.

That aside it is worrying to some degree that with DJI as with so many others back door methods are commonplace now.

There are ways around everything bit not for everyone as not everyone knows the secret clubs and members or are aware they even exist. My Mavic rarely gets airborne now which is a real real shame but until i get time to find my way to freeing up the Mavic it does not get out so they will get very little from me.

Should everyone be concerned about data gathering? generally no but by the back door and illegally then yes as if you are doing nothing wrong does not matter. what matters is a criminal act in the same way the drone police jump all over everyone here for breaking a rule. It seems many of those same police are happy for DJI to break any rule they want and that is fine.

Yes and they have gotten so *** smart today. Instead of making one large charge they put a lot of small monthly charges on your card. If you don't pay attention to the statements you might not even notice $50 a month extra on your card.
