Ever since last weekend I've not been able to get the camera feed onto the DJI Go 4 app when setting up to fly, so I've not even bothered to get airborne. App shows "disconnected."

Is this because I need to update the app? I am reluctant to update as nobody has anything good to say about the update on the app reviews.

Or maybe it's something else?

I have not. Is the cable a common culprit for this?

I never did update the app or firmware since I started flying my Mav six weeks ago.

The cable is a common problem. Try using the USB port under the controller but you have to also disconnect your other cable.

Another problem is if you've maxed out the shutter wheel.

I updated the app yesterday, only got to connect to the Mavic today and was very disappointed to see that half the video feed was missing, certain parts of the feed I could not see, there was straight lines running through. I landed and switched over to Litchi with zero issues. Another thing I noticed is that it (DJI GO 4) didn't ask me to update the firmware on the Mavic.
