Can I use my RC-N1 controller for both M3 and MA2?

I seem to recall hearing that both the Mavic 3 and the Air 2 would work with the same controller and iPad5 tablet.
I updated both to the latest firmware M3 v01.00.0700 and MA2 v01.01.0720
The RC is running v04.13.0600 with DJI Fly 1.6.4.
But when I try to pair the Mavic Air 2, I get this "firmware inconsistent" message, so when I press "Continue", I get this second screen to update. However, when I press "Update", the dial spins for about 2 seconds and then goes back to the same screen.
I've tried with the MA2 off before I started, and with it on, but nothing seems to work.
Am I missing a step here, or is this just not doable? Thanks.

I have the same two drones but don't think they will because I think they run diff versions of Osync.
