I've been playing around with recording my son's cross-county practice. The route takes Mavic 2 Zoom below tree line, through pre-established gaps above path. The course was mapped in MapMyRun, and the drone mission in Litchi. I setup the mission to roughly estimate his position on the field as a function of time. Mission verified in Google Earth using Litchi "Export as CSV". By setting maximum speed (about 13mph) in Litchi, was able to use right-stick (up-down) to fine-adjust the speed to match the runners.
The runners were not carrying any tracking device-- all "disconnected" filming.
