I use the goggles just for fun. They add another dimension to flying. If I know that I'm going to go fly the mavic somewhere, I always take them, unless I just don't have room or a free hand. When I fly from my front or backyard, I always have them handy.
I almost always fly 3 batteries in a row. If I'm in a new place, I almost always fly the first battery without the goggles, just so I can more easily get familiar with the terrain and any obstacles around. ( I'm still more comfortable flying with the iPad since I've done it a lot more, and glancing back and forth from the screen to the drone is a lot easier and faster than constantly flipping up the goggles to put eyes on the mavic.)
Then I'll usually fly the entire 2nd batter with the goggles on, just to enjoy the birds-eye feeling and get a closer look at certain things. The 3rd battery is a toss-up. It depends on where I'm flying and whether I feel like just zipping around in sport mode practicing high-speed maneuvers, or taking it slow, or experimenting with Fixed-Wing mode with the goggles, etc.
I'd say, overall I probably have my goggles on 25-30% of the time that I'm flying in the past 6 months since I got them.
I look at it as, GO BIG or GO HOME. Having the Mavic without having the Goggles is like having a new jet black Lamborghini Diablo and not getting the windows tinted.
Think of how pissed you'll be the first time you're showing off the mavic to a friend after your kid's soccer game and he says, "Hey have you seen the VR goggles for drones? Those look cool!"
You'll get to say, "Yeah, I almost bought those." --- That'll make you feel better.
Hope this helps.
