I was using my Mavic over water this morning in Sydney (near Manly) and the local ferry sailed under me. Have I broken any rules?

Strictly yes, if there were any people out on deck (not under the roof of the ferry). But I wouldn't beat myself up about it - you did not intentionally break the rules and, because of your experience, you'll no doubt be more careful in future.

If by some chance someone reported you to CASA, I'm sure that they would consider the circumstances and simply issue a friendly warning.
