Gday all

As I was so impressed with the info on this site when I was doing my pre-purchase research, I just had to join now I am a Mavic owner/pilot.
Many thanks to the admins & contributors for sharing their knowledge. A lively community is one of the reasons I chose to go with a DJI product.
I decided a Mavic 2 Zoom was the craft for me. I am new to drones & FPV but have been flying RC planes & helis on and off for 40+ years. Yes, I remember a time when helis didn't have gyros!
With this background, beginner mode on the maiden flight lasted about 3 mins. "P" mode for a couple of batteries now. Next flight will be sport, wish me luck ;)

I live in the city of Adelaide, South Australia & am quite keen to contact any others around here. Places to fly locally are pretty limited so any suggestions from locals would be greatly appreciated. Also, not sure if there even are any but, any drone/flying clubs that people can recommend. Ive always enjoyed club flying in the past & the flying part of this hobby is just as important to me as learning the videography side.

Cheers

Steve

Welcome Steve . . . we are happy to have you. We have plenty of pilots from 'down under' on this forum with lots of knowledge and experience. Have fun!!

Hello Steve, welcome to the forum.
Loads of Aussies on here, and quite a few in Adelaide . . . see the thread on the regional section for Australia, Adelaide

Don't see too many posts from those old names, maybe they've had crashes or moved on to other hobbies.

I'm down south if you ever want to catch up for a fly, just send a PM (conversation) message with mobile, can reply with mine.

Just itching to get out and test some new strobes, weather not too good today, hoping the public holiday tomorrow might clear a bit.
Need a good 2 to 3km area I can fly along (not over ocean), so I can see these little suckers and measure distances out without danger.

Welcome to the forum! :)

Hi zygo Welcome to Mavic Pilots.

You say “ have been flying RC planes & helis on and off for 40+ years “
I have a friend who has flown RC plains for many years but he won't entertain drones, he says they are toys and take no skill, I think he is missing out.

Hi
Yeah, some people reject change & technology like its the enemy, not me. I remember when ARF & foamies first came along & they all complained because it was too easy... then they got over it when they worked out that because the planes were so cheap you could "fly them like you stole them" :)

Lets face it, the little mavics are extremely easy to control basic flight. Even I was surprised. A complete novice could have it airborne & controlled in minutes. Then after their heart stops beating out of their chest simple maneuvers are super easy. The rest is just practice, practice, push the boundaries, practice again. I think for the novice (and others) the fact it reverts automatically to a stable hover if you dead stick it is the key. For me, I got to get used to it.

Hi
I will have a dig around that thread, thanks.
Im planning on going down to the 90mile beach (salt creek) next weekend. Do you know if you can legally fly down there? Not sure whether the boundary of the national park is the high water mark or the low or somewhere else?

Hi Zygo,

Welcome to the Mavic scene from another fellow South Ozzie, great to have you aboard!

I am just a couple of "ditches" away at Port Lincoln - bought my first MP about 14 Months ago, still enjoying the combination of flying, aerial video and still photography. Often many times a week!

I fly mostly from private farm properties, but also quite a lot of coastal work eg shark and salmon school spotting. I Use the Litchi flight app a lot, for waypoint flights and highly recommend it to you as well.

My advice is, learn all you can from this forum and "you-tube" about these amazing little machines and their capabilities, to get the maximum pleasure and enjoyment of this fabulous hobby.

Like you, I came from many years in the large scale RC model aircraft scene, but mostly left that behind these days... This is much more practical and enjoyable for me at any rate!

Oh yeah, love the Coorong, have driven the beaches and dunes from the Murray mouth to the Vic Border a couple of times (once in mid winter, exciting stuff !), and the Coorong, Beachport - Robe, Canunda many more times on shorter trips :)

Ok, you should be all right flying most places along there, just use common sense, fly over the low tide area, and film to the dunes / Coorong water . . .
The Nat Pk boundary is probably not terribly definable, but they could have at least to high tide mark, possibly low tide mark, but if you take off on the dunes edge there you might be technically on 'their' land.
Some will say if no one around, a 10 - 15 min flight now and then will do no harm in that area, the place is very remote and sparsely visited . . . personally I've never seen a Ranger on ANY of the beaches anywhere on the Limestone Coast in 30, 40 trips, maybe more.

See Google maps here shows 42 Mile as the park boundary being well down to probably the lowest astronomical tide level . . . alternate between map and satellite view . . .

While back at Tea Tree and in many places towards the Murray mouth, it's shown as near the dune line . . .

That's IF you can fly . . . being an RC man for a while, you are probably aware of the wind factor . . . this is as important (or more) with these drones.
As you are probably also aware, at any time of year you MAY find the winds down there are pretty strong, so take care.

Enjoy the weekend, and hope you get a safe fly or two in.

Welcome to Mavic Pilots from Dayton Ohio USA! Enjoy your new M2Z, Fly safe and have fun!

Hi Steve,
I live at Reynella and would be interested on finding other local MA2 flyers to know where the best places to practise and learn to fly the MA 2 safely. I've yet to get my MA2 but expecting it next week.

Cheers,
Tony

Hi Tony,
I used to use Wilfred Taylor reserve (SW corner archery / dog obedience 2 large areas) quite a bit for a practice a few years ago, and I still go there now and then to test something (6 months ago with new DJI RE goggles).

Bear in mind all Onka council parks have the draconian no drone / model aircraft policy, but there are no signs as such, it's buried in their by-laws.
Go there and fly when quiet, I do so mid week, working hours (self employed and very flexible) when no one is around, keep it sensible, not over roads / homes nearby etc, and never had an issue.

Any large oval etc to practice would be good, same thing, avoid times when people are around.

Hi Mavic_South_Oz, I know Wilfred Taylor reserve which is a few Km from my place. Since I posted to the email I posted, to which you refer, I have been practising at the Lonsdale FB Club oval, on Sheriff's rd and also at the Field River quarry area. I frequently find the Field River area absent of people during the week so it's a good area to do what I want as long as I keep away from the Southern Expressway and the surrounding houses. There a lot old ruins there to focus on but it can get very hot with little shade.
I've also flown down over the Murray River at Wellington, the Field River wetland area and over the Sturt Gorge.

Cheers @Cirdan . . . bottom line is pretty much anywhere away from restricted airspace that is devoid of people is great.
If flying with courtesy to surrounding residences, away from roadways, dog walkers who enter the park anytime, etc etc, you really aren't in for too much bother from anyone.
I'll certainly crack out Sports mode at Wilfred Taylor if I feel like a bit of fun, and keep it well within that northern open area at the states road end, very little movement of people the mid week during work hours.

I recall my very first flight was in there, within 20m of my take off point and quite low, maybe 30' up.
Took just a couple of photos, and was pretty relieved I didn't crash :)
Pretty sure most drone pilots never forget their first flight.

I like flying anywhere really, waterways are nice, ships graveyard and port river area, the Hallett Cove cliff area is a bit of a favourite for the ocean / rock type features, and sunset is usually very nice.

Enjoy the M2P.
I guess you're getting pretty comfortable with it by now.
