Hi there, just bought my first drone, a DJI Mini 2 - super excited to start learning how to fly it - Does anyone local in San Antonio (preferably NW side near RIM) know where I can fly it legally and without bothering anyone? I would love a big empty field that's close if possible - also would love to meet drone flyers locally to learn and fly together - cheers - Alex

Hello from the Crossroads of America arkanaan.

Nice to meet you Alex. 🤝

If you haven't done it yet, swing by the Pilot Institute portal and take the TRUST test and keep a copy with you when you fly.

FAA TRUST Online Portal for Recreational Drone Operators - Pilot Institute

The mini 2 won't need a registration with the FAA for recreational flights since it's under 250 grams.

But if you add stuff to it like prop guards, strobes, etc. that will push it past the limits, then it'll need registered.

It's only five bucks and the numbers look cool on the aircraft.

Does anyone local in San Antonio (preferably NW side near RIM) know where I can fly it legally and without bothering anyone?

The use of this app may help around airports and other areas that may restrict flights.

It won't show local restrictions such as parks but it will help.

Good luck, have fun, and welcome to the Forum.

Welcome from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, USA. I am a Mini 2 Flyer and I know the excitement of flight. So, if I may offer some advice.

Do not let the excitement of the moment get the best of you. When you are going out to fly, do it slowly and deliberately. Get used to a set procedure and even practice it.

There are so many things I could write but these are the highlights that I feel need mentioning.

If you are in the U.S.A. there are a couple of Legal Things you need to do… Register your Drone, that can be done at the FAA Web Site. You also need to get your TRUST Certificate. You can get that at the Pilot Institute Web Site (FREE…) .

If you live in another country and are fly there, be sure you are following all of the laws and rules applicable to you.

Plug in your phone/tablet into your controller; turn on the Controller and DJI Fly App (if it does not start on its own…). On the Drone, open the front legs, then open the back legs, then remove the Gimbal Cover.

The Gimbal is the most delicate item on the Drone and banging or bumping can damage it. I also fastened a short "Remove Before Flight" ribbon to the cover so it's more noticeable and I do not forget to remove it…

Turn on the drone and watch it come to "life." Watching the Gimbal go through its self-check is almost like watching a kitten or puppy opening its eyes for the first time…

Place the drone down (preferably on a Landing Pad) while it finishes its self-test (collecting satellites, etc…).

Check your battery status (Phone, Drone, and Controller), check the Signal Strength, by now the Controller should have reported it updated the Home Point.

Lift off, 4-5 feet (1-1/2 meters) or so, hover a bit, check the controls (move the drone a bit forward, back, left, right, yaw left and right). By now, your Controller will probably report again, Home point Updated.

If you go out in a rush and race thru your start up and take off before the drone has finished it prep, it may update its Home Point over that pond or that old tree you are flying over and in your excitement, you'll fly the drone long past it Low Battery point and when it engages Return to Home and lands in the pond or in a tree; it will be all on you…

Now go have fun, learn to fly the drone by sight before you try to fly it out a distance depending on the video feed, FPV.

I would also advise you to use YouTube and watch a lot of the Videos on flying and setting up the Drone. When it is too dark, too cold, or too wet, you can "fly it vicariously" through YouTube. Also watch some of the Blooper Drone Videos and learn how not to fly your "New Baby."

Below is the link to all of the downloads offered by DJI for the Mini 2. You will also find the 75-page User's Manual, in case your Drone did not come with one. The User Manuals are published in different languages.

After you read the Manual, read it again, you will be surprised what you missed the first time and you will be better prepared for that first "scary moment…"

Happy and Safe Droning…

Greetings from Birmingham Alabama, welcome to the forum!

Hello from Minnesota and welcome to the Forum....congratulations on your DJI Mini 2....There's a lot of good quality teaching/feedback going on in here. Just ask, and the experts are great on providing good sound advice for you to apply and use... Remember to always Fly safe, Fly Smart and keep the drone in sight.

Sup fellow San Antonioian? I fly out in the Live Oak/Converse area all the time. My favorite place in San Antonio is Woodlawn Park.

I am looking for other Drone Pilots in the San Antonio, TX area as well.
As far as this site goes, it looks like not many folks in the San Antonio, TX area are active.

I am fairly new to the Drone industry.
I had a DJI Inspire v2 but sold it to purchase my Mavic 2 EA.
I had too many "thoughts" in my "egg-basket" of what areas I wanted to work in. I am a firm believer in having a "Plan-"B" & a Plan-"C"!
Inspections do okay as far as the $'s go. Quick down and dirty push them out the door... until I become more proficient, then, to diversify the areas of industries based on demand and the number of UAS 107 Pilots I can bring on board.

If you know of a Drone "meet" in or around the San Antonio, TX area, let me know.
If there are none, I may try to put on a monthly "meet" either at specific "flying" locations or at a restaurant or both!
I have 21 acres to fly around here in Devine, TX. I can make an obstacle course and stations to practice diverse types of flying and different industry applications!
We can also have themed "meets" as in meeting at lakes, approved vacant sites etc. ...

If anyone is interested, let me know!
