Hi All,

I've done a bit with RC over the years, but have never tried a DJI drone.

I've just bought a Mavic Pro with apparently 38 minutes on the clock, which I hope to use for land based drone fishing. It came with a new/unused drop mechanism as well.

I'm really keen for this and look forward to picking your brains for tips and tricks.

Cheers,

Neil.

Hi Neil,

Welcome from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, USA. We have a Member's Map in the Upper Right of the Title Bar.

Since you live in Australia, there are specific laws and rules for you to follow, please check to ensure these are current.

So, you want to use your drone as a fishing "lure…" Don't you have a lot of Salt-water Crocs also dinning on some of those fish?

Here is a reminder, don't tease the Crocs… By the way, that mouth-shot was the last time that drone saw the light of day.

As a Newbie, here is some Good Old Fashion Advice…

Do not let the excitement of the moment get the best of you. When you are going out to fly, do it slowly and deliberately. Get used to a set procedure and even practice it.

There are so many things I could write but these are the highlights that I feel need mentioning.

Plug in your phone/tablet into your controller; turn on the Controller and DJI Fly App (if it does not start on its own…). On the Drone, open the front legs, then open the back legs, then remove the Gimbal Cover.

The Gimbal is the most delicate item on the Drone and banging or bumping can damage it. I also fastened a short "Remove Before Flight" ribbon to the cover so it's more noticeable and I do not forget to remove it…

Turn on the drone and watch it come to "life." Watching the Gimbal go through its self-check is almost like watching a kitten or puppy opening its eyes for the first time…

Place the drone down (preferably on a Landing Pad) while it finishes its self-test (collecting satellites, etc…).

Check your battery status (Phone, Drone, and Controller), check the Signal Strength, by now the Controller should have reported it updated the Home Point.

Lift off, 4-5 feet (1-1/2 meters) or so, hover a bit, check the controls (move the drone a bit forward, back, left, right, yaw left and right). By now, your Controller will probably report again, Home point Updated.

If you go out in a rush and race thru your start up and take off before the drone has finished it prep, it may update its Home Point over that pond or that old tree you are flying over and in your excitement, you'll fly the drone long past it Low Battery point and when it engages Return to Home and lands in the pond or in a tree; it will be all on you…

Now go have fun, learn to fly the drone by sight before you try to fly it out a distance depending on the video feed, FPV.

I would also advise you to use YouTube and watch a lot of the Videos on flying and setting up the Drone. When it is too dark, too cold, or too wet, you can "fly it vicariously" through YouTube. Also watch some of the Blooper Drone Videos and learn how not to fly your "New Baby."

Below is the link to all of the downloads offered by DJI for the Mavic Pro, including the User Manual.

After you read the Manual, read it again, you will be surprised what you missed the first time and you will be better prepared for that first "scary moment…"

Happy, Safe and Legal Droning…

Thanks all, most kind of you.

All good advice, and I've certainly been watching plenty of YT vids and reading the manual.

Totally true about taking your time. Despite a few years on fixed wings, if you hadn't had your coffee and weren't totally switched on you'd end up with a dead bird. I'll be very careful about that. I think for a start I'll get some battery life times just hovering, and balance charge them a couple times as they haven't had much use and have been stored. Hopefully they'll be OK.

I'm actually a farmer and have 140 acres of open flat land to practice on before I get out in public, which makes it much easier.

I look forward to learning all about this.

Good luck with everything and let us know how you get on with your drop mechanism. Don’t think I have seen a U.K. flier use that facility but think it’s not uncommon in the States and of course your country.

I'm in Port Macquarie, NSW. Beautiful area. I was down your way earlier this year.

At the very last second a better offer (in my opinion) popped up, and I picked it up today. A new and unused MPP fly more combo with another spare battery, 4 in total and a few spare props.

I'd arranged a standard MP1 and was going to buy the 8331 props and some ebay batteries, but this is literally brand new and the app confirmed it. It's offering me to register for warranty and care package or something... would they still honor that and is it worthwhile.

Anyway, it cost me 200AUD more at 800 bucks, but he literally charged the batteries and charger for the first time for me (again the app confirmed it) and I don't need to buy anything other than my line release, so I'm very happy.

I'll head over to the MPP section and start pleasuring myself over threads about my new toy.
