The Hollywood Sign is 4.69 miles away from the BUR airport. I called the phone number listed on the Airmap app and was connected to the tower with outbound voicemail that said, "if you are a drone pilot asking for permission, consider it refused."
Yikes... seems a bit harsh and against the spirit of the regulation, asking hobbyist drone pilots to notify the tower only for a blanket "no" to be given.
Question #1: I've read somewhere that pilots only need to notify the tower, not receive permission. Is that true and can you site a source?
Question #2: With the recent decision that FAA can no longer can require the licensing of hobby drone pilots, is this rule still enforceable. (I got my license anyway just to be on the safe side.)
