Holy ****…34% tariffs on imports from China

I'll welcome all the tariffs President Trump imposes. Enough of getting taken advantage of as a country. We can make our own goods.
Simple economics: With this administration, talk is cheap because supply always exceeds demand. It's one thing to claim that we're being taken advantage of and another to provide proof of that. It's even harder to provide proof when there isn't any. Lies, damned lies, and statistics. Meanwhile, expect the price of all but one flavor of Kool-Aid to go up -- the flavor that about half of our population has been drinking for the last eight or nine years. Everything else is going to be a lot more expensive, as well.

[...] But now let's talk about Canada as I have personally dealt with them since the 80's
Exactly! Thanks for posting that link. That page explains precisely how tariffs are applied. A tariff is a surcharge tax paid by whoever is importing the goods.

It works exactly the same way for you the other way around. If you, an American, buy something from Canada and import it into the USA, you are now required to pay the surcharge tariff recently announced by Trump. Trump's tariffs are a surcharge import tax paid by American importers.

By the way, the 25% tariff imposed on March 4, 2025, by Canada on USA (as per the link you posted) was enacted in retaliation to the repeated on again off again and on again threats made by Trump against Canada ever since his election.

Nobody in Canada wants these any of these tariffs. The tariffs applied by Trump directly hurt YOU. Americans pay those Trump import tariffs to your American treasury. It is a surcharge tax paid by YOU. Those same Trump tariffs only indirectly hurt Canadians when you stop buying our suddenly much more expensive products.

In retaliation our Cdn government applied those March 4th 25% tariffs on US products. We now have to pay that surcharge tax on any American products imported into Canada. That hurts your economy when we stop buying your now overpriced products, and it hurts us Cdns when we are forced to pay 25% more to buy those American products if they aren't available elsewhere.

Your Trump tariffs hurt Americans directly, and our own Cdn applied 25% retaliatory tariffs hurt Canadians directly. That's why it's called a "trade war". It hurts BOTH countries until one or the other cries uncle and gives up. Meanwhile the stock market crashes, inflation soars, housing prices and groceries and car prices go through the roof (prices on all the things Trump promised would go down on day one after his election).

A trade war with your closest neighbour and biggest trading partner makes no sense at all for either of our countries. Why is he doing this???

I have given up on these types of discussions since everyone is playing off their own facts particularly after I witnessed that completely made up formula on how tariffs are calculated passed off as a well-known industry often used standard.

After a few discussions earlier this week I actually found out most people aren’t even interested in learning the truth. Even after the prices rise and the effects come to life in the coming months it will still be spun and ignored. Total waste of time just live thru it and try to take this one sitting down. When the Mavic 4 comes in at 6k we’ll just call it DJI being greedy.

Exactly.

That's the bit that bugs me the most. You constantly see people like this guy, crying "fake news", "lamestream media", and "Stop being brainwashed by Gov't funded media. LMAO!" But when questioned, they can't provide or point to any actual facts to support their position.
Total hogwash. Canadian politicians [in bed with the lamestream media] are trying to pass off their own delinquency in dealing with the border and paying their 2% GDP defense spending by blaming Trump and calling it a 'war'...
Stop being brainwashed by Gov't funded media. LMAO!

Over and over, Trump keeps stating that Canada or China or whoever else will make America rich because those countries have to pay his tariffs. That's not how tariffs work. It's the American importer who pays Trump's import surcharge to the American government. And the importer ultimately passes that increased cost on to American consumers. Trump's import tariffs are a new surcharge tax imposed directly on Americans.

It's not rocket science. Fact-checking isn't difficult. Anyone with access to Google, or any other preferred search engine, can search for things like, "Who pays for tariffs?"

And still, when you try to tell people that simple fact, they'll respond with such convincing arguments like, "Total hogwash".

I'm open to debate, and always eager to learn new stuff. If I'm wrong in anything I've said, I'll happily admit it and be thankful when someone corrects my errors, then hopefully I can avoid looking stupid in future. Telling me I'm, "being brainwashed by Gov't funded media" just doesn't cut it as a convincing argument.

This thread is bordering on slipping into a political discussion. I personally think it is too early to evaluate, and that is one of the administration's (Trump's) classical art of the deal negotiating ploys. Let's wait until it plays out for a while. The ideal situation would be zero tariffs on all sides, e.g.: free trade. Maybe that is the end goal.

For my own personal situation, I have no plans to purchase a new drone. My M3 and Mini 4 Pro are sufficient for all of my needs.

CUSMA as agreed to in Trump's first term is presumably binding, until the "art of the deal" says ignore the trade agreement. So much for hoping the next trade agreements will be honored.

🤔

Here is a concise analysis of Trump's announced tariffs on 180 countries. Pay close attention. How can anyone justify this nonsensical destruction of America's economy, let alone its world-wide effect?

Simple - he doesn't care about the nonsensical destruction in the slightest. That list is all the countries he wants to have lined up to come grovel for relief by bending the knee and kissing the ring.

Economic pain is what little people experience......

At the end of the day, I think the only universal language is results. We're disturbingly close to setting the house on fire and needing to wait for the fire to burn entirely out before we determine if the house is totaled or if it's gained a story.

It's not only 34%. That's what was added yesterday. It's a grand total of 65% now for DJI
Quoting the economist April 3, 2025 "Speaking in the Rose Garden of the White House, the president announced new “reciprocal” tariffs on almost all America’s trading partners. There will be levies of 34% on China, 27% on India, 24% on Japan and 20% on the European Union. Many small economies face swingeing rates; all targets face a tariff of at least 10%. Including existing duties, the total levy on China will now be 65%. "

What I've learned in my few years on planet Earth.
in 1969 my mother was complaining because gas cost 24 cents per gallon.
In 1976 (or 1977) I bought gas for 56 cents per gallon and the next day it went to 57 cents.
So the price went up by over double in 7 years. And it never went back down.
In 1974 my mother was complaining about the price of meat skyrocketing and talking about the boycotts.
Eventually, the price subsided but it never went back where it was.
I don't remember the year but the same thing happened with sugar.
And then in 1977 coffee went up in price. REALLY high. And my parents tried drinking tea instead but they couldn't handle it. But the price of coffee finally subsided. But it never came back to normal inflation levels.

And the pattern has repeated with any spike in costs. Whenever a price skyrockets, people tend to be happy when it subsides, even though it never comes back down to "normal" levels. NEVER.

We will all see with eggs. Once the situation settles down, the price of eggs won't come back to near June 2024 levels (date arbitrarily picked).

People might get accustomed to paying higher prices because of tariffs. And when the tariffs are reduced, the prices won't come down to yesterdays levels and there will be lots of wealthy entities that will get even wealthier.

When you think about it, we're used to paying $4+ for gas now. Every time it spikes, when it comes back down, it's higher than it was before the spike.

Anybody see The daily report on Comedy Central? One of the countries that the president has imposed tariffs on has no human population, only penguins,
Well Mr. President, I think any nation who has overcome the whole living in an icy wasteland and No opposable thumbs thing To create Their own products to export deserves at least a small break.

Now for the REAL Story

The Heard Island and McDonald Island are the Australian islands located near Antarctica. While the world laughs at Trump for imposing a tariff on islands whose only inhabitants are penguins. But here's the truth of the matter:

Panax notoginseng, commonly referred to as Chinese ginseng is grown only in China and can only be fertilized with poop from the Adélie penguin. This species of penguin widely populates McDonald Island. The Chinese harvest over 5,000 kilograms every year from McDonald Island thus allowing them to be the sole exporter of of Panax notoginseng.

Bottom line, no penguin poop = no Chinese ginseng.

Who said trump is an idiot??

I was not aware that we are now concerned with the Australian Economy as well.
So if I get this right an Chinese Penguin poop conglomerate has arrived in the Australian owned McDonald Islands to shovel the poop away.
If we're already gonna tariff the ginseng from China, Why are we gonna make China pay more for poop we don't even own?
I suppose its good news for all the American Panax notoginseng start-ups out there?

Even if the price goes up significantly, I would still buy a DJI simply because I like their capabilities , consistency on quality and operation, it would still be cheaper than any American Made UAS System available to the consumer, if there's any left.

So, exactly how much penguin poop is Trump importing into the US from the Heard and McDonald Islands?

That 10% tariff only applies to products imported into the US. Penguin poop going to China is not tariffed by the US. The tariffs apply to the ginseng products imported into the US from China.

The world-wide application of US tariffs affects things like for instance, electronics that were once produced cheaply in China. US imposed tariffs on them. So China moved production facilities to Korea, as US imports from there weren't tariffed as heavily. So, now the US applies heavier tariffs on Korea as well.

Who said trump is an idiot??

Um, practically everyone?
