Hopefully weather permitting I shall be taking my new mavic air out on its maiden voyage. I have set the parameters to start with at max height 30m and distance at 100m.
Two questions. Does any of the quick shot modes over ride these numbers or stick to it. And secondly, if the box is ticked in the auto take off mode for precision landing could you still take off manually and still have the precision landing. Sorry for keep asking questions ...

My thought;

If this is your first flight, I strongly recommend flying in beginner mode until you get the hang of it. Beginner mode limits the max distance and height to 30m but more importantly, reduces the responsiveness of the drone. If you insist on not starting with beginner mode, note that the mavic air is very agile in P-GPS (normal) mode; be careful with those sticks, don't push them all the way up or down or sideways. Try easing in to them and letting them go gently.

The precision take off check box is only available in auto take off. If you want precision take off in manual take off; start motors and push the right left stick up and ascend straight up to about 6 meters and let the bird hover there for a few seconds (before you push it up and out) so that it can take a better picture of its take off area.

Forget about quick shots in your first few flights. Get acquainted with your bird first, the quick shots will be there waiting for you later.

Good luck and have a blast!

Thanks Doppler for that info. I will definitely go with your suggestions. One question .. you say start the motors up and push the Right stick ... Im in mode 2 and up down is left for me... maybe I'm reading it wrong. Sorry to be a pain

My apologies; that should have been left stick. To start motors in manual mode; you push both the left and right sticks down and out simultaneously. This will start the motors and the Mavic air will idle on the ground. You then push the left stick;continue to push on the left stick till it is about 6 or so meters above the ground. It will take off nice and easy.

Watch these two videos; he does a really good job of explaining things than I ever could. First one is about setting it up; second one about flight control and flight modes. If you are done with the setup and all, proceed to the second video. I have found these two videos very helpful when I started.

Quickshots will not override max altitude or distance.

Never thought about PL if taking off manually and have the box checked. I ready don’t think so and even if it did you’d need to fly up to 20 feet and wait a second for it to even possibly work but I’d bet a lot of money it wouldn’t

The precision takeoff option is only displayed if you choose auto take off. In manual take off, it is never presented as an option. But if you manually take off, ascend to about 6-8 meters and let it hover there for a few seconds, it is able to take a good picture of where it took off; and the landing on RTH is pretty much perfect. I have tried it, it is impressive.

Read the user manual and become familiar with it. Use beginner mode and practice flying in figure 8's. Do that all day. Both big and small ones. Also dont try to use the screen to fly if you are just starting out. Learn how to watch your bird and the direction it's going. Practice flying away and learn to use your RTH. You will be suprised what just these few things will teach you. You wont be sorry. Also you can start the motors by also pulling the sticks down and in as well. Its in the manual. Get a toy drone and learn to hover. Sounds strange but it will set you up for success. Just my 2 cents :)

Thanks for all this info. I take it then the RTH height will also be determind while in beginners mode (think its 30m) ... so even if I had RTH set to 100m . it will only go to 30m. Sorry for sounding thick, but trying to wrap my head and understanding of the principal of it all. I have flown radio control powered and glider aircraft for many years so hopefully that will give me a bit of a start. Still feeling pretty nervous on this first outing ... No doubt I will think of some more questions soon .. thanks again guys ..

RTH altitude is determined by what you set it to in the GO4 app. If the aircraft is below the set height, it will climb to the value set in the GO4 app. But if if the aircraft's current altitude is higher than the RTH height set in the GO4 app, it will NOT descend, it will return home at the current altitude. But RTH behavior is contingent on a number of other factors. This is what the manual says .Screenshot_2019-05-13 Mavic Air User Manual v1 0 pdf.png

And finally for now (I think) .. the pause button on the controller. Is my understanding of this correct or am I wrong. If the mavic is returning after RTH has been activated or on one of the other auto flying options ie dronie, circle etc .. does this button overide what is going on and puts it back to 'hands on'. If so are you then able to re engaged another auto option etc. Once again, sorry for so many questions. You have made it a lot easy to understand than reading stuff. Thanks.

It may sound odd but I really have never used that pause button so far. I guess it is a good thing that I haven't found need for it yet. But more importantly, I don't think I should give out advice on something I haven't actually tried. Hopefully, someone who has used it might chime in.

The pause button during manual flight acts like an “Emergency brake” stopping the forward progress of the Mavic in its tracks.

For automatic flight modes the pause button has a little bit different function. It will stop the drone in its tracks but also has the benefit of allowing you to press it again to restart some intelligent flight modes. It doesn’t necessary give you back full control when you do this though it just stops.

Toggle into Sport mode when in an intelligent flight mode and then back to p-mode to regain full manual control
