Part 107 or 101?

The instructions stated to use Part 107 registration (see attached image). But reading elsewhere, including at FAADroneZone, it sounds like a recreational only pilot should register under Section 336 aka Part 101. I've already paid my $5 and purchased labels so I'm leaning strongly towards letting it ride. Opinions? Advice? Thx. I don't plan on spending $150 to get a Remote Pilot Certification and will never be flying 'non-recreation'. Why is so much government red tape usually so unclear?

You should choose Section 336 if you're only going to fly as a hobbyist.

If you are only going to fly recreationally then you don't need to register each drone under the Part 107 dashboard - the Section 336 registration that covers any drone that you own is sufficient. However, it is perfectly legal for a non-107-certified pilot flying recreationally to register drones under the Part 107 system, getting a registration number for each drone, and so if you have already done that they you are covered. However - if you acquire more drones then you might want to get a Section 336 registration number to avoid having to spend $5 registering each new drone.

Not "usually" but almost always. The government thrives on bureaucracy. Why? Because the vast majority of the folks who actually write the laws are lawyers. And no lawyer ever wrote anything in plain easy-to-understand simple English. Rather, their job is to make it as obtuse as possible for job security on their part.

Yeah, no kidding. Right on faa site above, it says I can fly under Section 44809 that is still in Draft with no expected release date. Good grief! I agree with you 100% but even knowing, they got me. Even the faa rep I called before getting the MP2 would NOT admit a Remote Pilot Certification for hobbyists was unnecessary and was trying to sign me up for a test date. Maybe she was on commission. Want to LOL but it's not funny.

What certificate for hobbyist are you talking about. The only thing required (as of today 4/23/2019) in the US for a hobbyist is Registration (hobby or commercial).

No, you’re not. The answer (yes or no) is for the question above, not the question below. So he answered “No” to the over 55 lbs question.

Yes, but silly isn't the word I was thinking of when I took a double take after answering their questions and seeing that. After working closely with Federal regulations for 34 years on military aircraft contracts, nothing surprises me anymore. Good flying & thanks for the responses. And my apologies to the mod for using unapproved/inappropriate wordplay in an above reply. I'll do my best to behave in future posts.
