My brother-in-law was given a Mavic Pro (circa 2016 I believe) from his son, who (as I understand it, got it from a friend). Three (bad) batteries, case, drone & camera cover, plus a plethora of cables & battery charger. So, since I have a Mini 4P, he asked me to take a look at it. Looks to me like it was never flown, in very nice condition. It does, however need new flight batteries (one of the three is bloated, the other two won't take a charge) and a battery in the controller (that's dead as well). And, I do understand that he will need the Remote ID and licensed with the FAA.

I've been reading the posts on this forum about this drone to try to catch up on controller software...

However, before we start putting money into this drone, I was hoping to find out if this drone is registered, that it could be released by the original owner and re-registered, or didn't they lock registration for this model?
Any suggestions where I start to solve this puzzle would be appreciated.

The Mavic Pro cannot be locked to a specified DJI account since it does not use DJI Fly.

Not "licensed" but registered with the FAA; you need to go to the FAA.gov website and register the drone using the drone's s/n and details.

You have the drone and the remote controller, as long as it isn't reported stolen, that's all you need. There is no need to contact the original owner of this drone since there's nothing to release; re-registering and locking registration is not a process for this drone model.

Fix it up and have fun! The original mavic is the funnest one to fly! not sure why BUT I love my OG Mavic. Note the good advice above and go flying.
The controller batteries are easy to get and easy to change. Drone Bats are still findable too BUT are getting rarer, SAVE ANY BATTERIES THAT ARE NOT SWOLLEN, You can find people that will make you new batts with your old shells in the future.

The original MP batteries go into a hibernation state if not charged for extended periods. If there is any possibility that they’ll work they can be brought out of hibernation if they are left charging for a few hours.
Don’t try this indoors just in case there is a problem. Outdoors away from flammable materials and buildings but somewhere they can be monitored.
I still have 3 of the 4 batteries from 2017 still working but they were never abused and only charged once they’d cooled down with the occasional charge while stored.

When those batteries die save them or at least the shells so you can get more batteries made for you I would say that within a few years you won't be able to get them new. If they won't charge don't try to bump charge them they don't like that.
Get a charger with a storage option and store them at 60%. Never store them below or above that.
