Most likely this is a simple question.

Have a new (not a week old) Air 3 and was curious about the RID.
Dose it even work, and is it automatic or has to be activated.
So, I opened Drone Scanner on my phone.
I powered on the Air 3 and controller.
Nothing! No indication that its active or working.
How do you test, and does it have to be turned on somehow?

Yes the RID works on the Air 3 and it is automatic; does not have to be activated. What phone are you trying to detect RID using the Drone Scanner app? Have you tried other apps? Please test when your drone is up in the air for a few minutes.

Is RID US-only?

Are there similar apps showing drones nearby in other countries?

Yes, your RID is working. It can take several minutes for the app to detect. Air Sentinal is the one I think works the best.

I'm uncertain about the specific model of the DJI drone, but I did manage to detect either my neighbor or a real estate photographer operating a drone the other day using the 'Drone Scanner' app.

UPDATE
RID worked when airborne & after a minute or two.
IMO to much info shown!
Oh well, the new norm

No need for checking with 3rd party app. Just let the aircraft warm up and after starting prop rotation check on a phone or tablet under wi-fi for the RID broadcast identifier.

Indeed! Broadcasting the pilot's location throughout the flight to the world at large puts a target on every drone pilot's back while flying! Too many drone haters out there. Soon, sidearms will become necessary drone flying equipment for self defense!

Hope your mistaken.
If it comes to that it's time to give up recreational flying!
