RIP M2P - My Crash Video

Stitched together a quick 4 min movie using the 1080p downlink. Flying near Phoenix, Arizona, there are a lot of beautiful mountains in this area. Everything was going well with some close fly-overs, some in reverse. I was after a massive crack you see in the video, and was flying close to the walls in 4K 75 deg FOV, but will use 4k HQ in the future for a 55 deg FOV to give myself more distance for safety margin. I was doing a manual orbit and hit the side of the mountain. I will hike up next week but I doubt I can recover it, too steep. I thought you would enjoy the last video from this serial number. I wish I had the 4K footage. I will also use Tripod mode next time, the side sensors may have saved the day.

Bought her in Dec, had 220 miles on the bird.

What was the shadow at the beginning of the video going across the foreground? Just interested?

Good catch. In post I sped things up a bit... that is the shadow of a plane. The NFZ is a couple of miles from me, another good reason to hug those walls, but there is always a risk you will crash.

Did you go for a look or is it too inaccessible ?

As an original MP owner, doesn't the M2P have lateral sensors too ?
If so, you flew with them in usual default on ?

It didn't look like you were in sports mode.

Sorry for your loss - that does look like a major expedition to find it ... Continue the post when you find it and recover.
At least the 'Find my Drone' part of Go4 is going to give you a pretty accurate point on the map to aim for ...

You were on site so you no better the real terrain from the ground, not the air, but based on the video and angle of slope at impact, it looks recoverable, albeit, a difficult climb in any case! I hope you find it! I'm sure you have the coordinates for finding it with Google Earth.

Perhaps you could elaborate more on your statement regarding 4K HQ providing more distance for a safety margin. I'm new to the M2 and this statement threw me. I understand the FOV for 4K HQ, I just don't see how that would have helped avoid collision with the ground. The statement about being in Tripod mode to have side sensors makes good sense, it would be interesting to know if that would have stopped the drone before impact, given the angle of slope? I just don't follow the camera FOV comment, unless you were simply saying with a narrower FOV you would have stood off further to get the same photo, but then it seems like it would have just hit the terrain sooner? I'm still learning so I'm interested in what you learned from your experience.

It's always nice to help people who are going to the effort to understand their drone, especially those new to this. I learned a lot from those on this forum and there is massive amount of information on YouTube and web articles. Let me break down your comments and add notes that may be helpful, and if anyone else has something to add or correct, please step in for Ted and the others.

• Coordinates
  I have the coordinates of the crash site. You can use the DJI Find Drone feature in the upper right of the DJI 4 app. You can also use flight data downloaded from the drone to your PC (direct connection or syncing to the cloud, and pulling it into a site to analyze the data - I have a subscription to Air Data UAV. Analyzing flight data is another topic on it's own.
• Why use "4K HQ" to film further from the object to give yourself more room to avoid a mistake
  There are two 4K video resolutions named "4K HQ" and "4K FOV" (both with many frame rates). When you use "4K HQ" the object appears closer because it's field of view is less than the "4K FOV". So using "4K HQ" gives me a zoom effect since it will fill the screen with a a smaller FOV. Watch this video

  Note: the "4K FOV" samples from the 5.5K sensor to 4K, and the "4K HQ" crops the center of the sensor. This is something to learn later.
• Narrow FOV to stand off further does not mean hitting the terrain sooner
  In this video I use close shots for a dramatic effect, you can see especially in reverse only 10' above the rocks. I can get the same effect using HQ and not get as close, which is safer. For the crash it is always tricky on a slope - the height is reading above the take-off point, not above ground level "AGL" at any moment. Especially flying sideways into the slope is risky, I should have pulled back and checked it out first, I thought the slope was more gradual. I am not sure what you mean about hitting sooner... you can always gain an advantage by flying further from the subject using a narrower FOV. You are not going to get as much in the picture as a wider angle shot, so I use FOV when I have a safe distance from the subject.
• Tripod mode
  The side sensors are only enabled in Tripod mode, I should have used this. It may have saved me $1,500. I was not in sport mode, so the rest of the sensors were on (obstacle avoidance set in the DJI 4 app).

Thanks for the detailed and prompt response! The video was very helpful. I should have explained the M2 is my second drone and I've had my own mishaps with the Spark previously, a couple were DJI's problems, one was mine, and fortunately I had Refresh and was able to replace each loss. Accident prevention by learning from other's accidents, or incidents, is very important to protect my investment. I use Airdata UAV and actually am a gold member to take advantage of more battery management tools. I use it extensively to analyze my own flights to try and understand the aircraft better each time. I've got over 200 flights with the Spark, but am brand new to the M2. The video was helpful in explaining what you were referring to in your initial post regarding the different 4K settings. Thanks again! Let us know if you recover the drone.

Find another flyer in your area by checking the Regional area of this forum and ask for assistance with a fly over. A weighted hook dangling from another Mavic can snag an arm and levitate it to safety. For even more payload capacity a Phantom Series can fly up there and accomplish the same thing.

Wow, what a great idea. Similar to what I do with my RC boats, I have a string with a tennis ball and make a couple of circles around my stranded craft and pull it back to shore. Beats swimming. Thanks

You are more advanced than I thought There is an app that pushes the sync'ed DJI data on your drone phone to the Airdata website, no need for a cable, in case you are not using it...
