So now I’m grounded!

Well, France is now in confinement for at least a month! At least I have this wonderful forum to read and the videos to give me hope and inspiration. Mind you......hopefully I can post a little video when I receive my RS2.....Yipeee....should arrive tomorrow.
joking aside, I hope that you and your loved ones are all keeping safe. I don’t think I need to say more.

Dawn
I live in Melbourne Australia, and we have just come out of ours, curfew, travel and people limits and everything in between. Yesterday I went out for my first "decent" flight in 6 months.

I know exctly how lockdown feels and hope you come out of yours in a month. When you do, HIT THE SKIES!

Yes, for 1 hour per day and no more than 1 km from my home and with a written and signed derogation otherwise I get a 135 € fine. Oh and I can have fun but I must wear a mask and it is only to walk or take a little exercise. I shall hide my camera inside my jacket lol!
OK, your area looks rural, so get a ghillie suit or camo up like a tree, go outside, have fun, but just make sure you don't move fast because a tree that is running will attract attention!

Who you vote for is none of our business outside of the USA. Yes, it does have some effect on how the rest of the world reacts, but it is your country, your politics - what outside observers can't help but notice is the mortality figure. Your covid deaths (if the figures are correct) are now higher than all your losses in WW2, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq/Afghanistan put together - that is why I was saying good luck.

I don't envy ANY leader in any democratic country right now, it is a poisoned chalice. Imagine trying to formulate a policy that everyone will adhere to, in order to try to gain some semblance of control over the situation. It is an impossible task, with factions of society in all countries refusing to abide by whatever temporary laws are put in place, even though it is for the greater good. We have it here too - students revelling, because they don't believe it will happen to them (the young believe they are immortal), other cultures don't recognise the leadership and continue to socialise in tight groups, then wonder why they get high numbers of sufferers, but of course it is always someone elses' fault, usually the blame is levelled at the Government, all of them!

We are now in National lockdown too - no going out.
According to Wikipedia total US deaths (combatants & non-combatants) in World War 2 was 405,399 so they've got a little way to go yet to match that, including the other military conflicts with covid-19 deaths, but with a vaccine still not on the horizon your figures could sadly come to fruition into the new year if things don't change with too many people claiming "It's a hoax". What with the onset of winter in our latitudes and the restrictions flying my Mavic is becoming a fading memory.

Bought the original Mavic 1 Pro three years ago to shoot aerial video to complement the underwater stuff I'd shoot on dive trips to locations such as New Guinea, Palau, Indonesia and South Africa but, apart from practice flights, flying in the UK doesn't turn me on. Was hoping to get on a liveaboard in January to the Maldive Islands which has just announced it's rescinded its ban on visitors from the UK but today we've been informed that as covid-19 infections have spiked again to a dangerous level we'll be entering lock down again next Thursday for a month! I think that'll put the kybosh on trips abroad for the foreseeable future. Got my eye on the new DJI Pocket 2 and either a Mavic 2 Pro or the Mavic 3 Pro+SC, if it comes out within a few months, and then hunker down to familiarise myself with them and their manuals over the winter, maybe just in time for spring next year!

Well, before this all goes off on a tangent....
I come from the Land Down Under ..... we have so far got through this pretty lightly, some mistakes along the way but on the whole pretty good. New Zealand has done well. The vast majority of cases now appear to be from those returning from beyond our borders and quarantined for 14 days before retested and allowed out. West Australia and Queensland had strict hard borders, Victoria was harder hit but now are containing things. All of us down here had to endure lockdowns with restricted movements, social distancing and, so far, non compulsory wearing of masks. Being a retired Nurse with over 40 yrs experience am well aware of the ease of Viruses to spread. My thoughts go out to all the world for a good resolution with an effective vaccine.
Yes, I have lots of friends ‘Down Under’ and they keep me informed. Sometimes it pays to be at the other end of the World, lol. I have been lucky also for the last 40 years to take your fellow compatriots on tour all over Europe. I have immense respect for you all. Keep safe, we need you all to come back!

Unfortunately I've found travelling to some countries that claim to allow drone flying can be as frustrating as finding places to fly in the UK. Two years ago I contacted a safari lodge in Botswana for permission to take off from their grounds on the banks of the Zambezi and they said it would be OK. When I arrived some weeks later the general manager rescinded their permission saying the authorities said no, in case I might be acting for poachers looking for animals to kill! Flabbergasted wasn't the word! Similar in the Bahamas during a shark diving boat trip. Authorities wanted $500 deposited with customs to ensure I didn't sell my drone to a local where sales of drones are taxed heavily. Needless to say I didn't even bother, I've been caught like that before. Have some good video while snorkelling of me being deliberately butted in the chest by a 12 ft whale shark in the Philippines two years ago and some close encounters with similar sized Tiger sharks in the Bahamas in January before covid-19 struck, but this forum isn't the place for underwater stuff, is it?

Unless you have an ‘aquatic’ drone, perhaps not. However if you have a You Tube channel please send me your link. I have never seen anyone butted in the chest by a 12’ whale shark! ?

Its too bad, I think its relatively clear that the lockdowns do nothing but ruin the countries economy, and potentially cost more lives then they save.. We'll see if the discussed vaccines that are seemingly coming soon, will start providing some relief. Otherwise better Therapeutics and achieve herd immunity in higher numbers will start to stamp it out..

Lockdowns and restrictions such as masks (of the recommended type and worn over the mouth and nose) as well as maintaining distance from others do work. They have been relatively ineffective in the U.S. due to noncompliance... the new increases in cases correlate with this and the opening of many public venues And noncompliance with recommendations from CDC and WHO. Hope the vaccine is available soon and works... I have great concerns it won’t. BTW, my other job is being a doctor for 40 years.

If masks & lockdowns were truly effective, countries in the EU that are reportedly having significant spikes in "cases", despite having lockdowns and near or at 100% mask compliance, that would not be happening.. So, no, there are many studies that get hidden now, but can be found with some searching, that clearly show that for respiratory viruses, masks are largely ineffective..

And while we get spikes in "Cases", most of which recover (99% or better), peoples lives are turned upside down as they are forced to lockdown, cannot work, their businesses die.... the list of things that go wrong doing this is long..

This is debate that can go on and on, and you and many others may not agree, so the best we can do is hope that soon this will like many other virus iterations will pass into history and we'll move on... hopefully with some freedom left over..
