We need to stop calling the things we fly drones!

What should we start calling our unmanned flying toys?

  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)(a little broad but better)

  • Small Unmanned Aerial System (SUAS)

  • Helicopter (heli), Quadcopter (QC), Hexacopter (HC), Octocopter (OC)…

  • Other…. Put your ideas in the thread!

  • Stick with “drone”

How about "Drone", by common usage it is the common name. ............."If it ain't broke don't fix it"

Can we please stop....

"Drone" isn't very specific. There are drones with no propellers at all. RQ-4 Global Hawk is one example.

"Quadcopter" describes our aircraft precisely.

Well,, I call it Aircraft as mostly it has to be registered with FAA. Fine tune it, sure flying fan, Drone, Flying Drone Stick can be fine I guess :)

How about "QUAD" "Drone" contains a connotation of a flight on a mission to spy or blow up something. Respond with ACDC or Quad and whoever questions you may be somewhat perplexed unless you say Quadcopter or Aerial Controlled Deployable Camera. Why is it when your camera is elevated high above ground level that draws so much animosity? Why are they not purplexed when a helicopter flies overhead?

They know there's absolutely nothing they can do about it.

They don't see helicopters as spying on them, they see them as transportation.

All drones are spying on you. We all know that, right? What else are they for? /S

I brought this topic up years ago, as the word Drone started to be Dragged thur the mud by the Media .
I suggested that a Petition be started to change the Name to Droneling or Quadling letting people know immediately the size and nature of the Drone in Question .

If there really was power behind a signed Petition it might be worth getting it changed.

1. Stop lying to the Public
2. Harassment has increased of those flying a Droneling because of the Negative Association the Media has created
3. The Media is lazy and do a very poor job at defining there Drama causing a very distorted picture.

My conclusion was simple that Trend was in place as to NOT put DJI in a good light an were Content with the Shadow's they created around DJI

In other words if the word Drone were to ever cause someone to smile and get excited , it would also shine light on DJI and well that is just not going to happen as the word Drone was Dumped on hard

It’s not what we call them that matters but it’s what we do with them that does. Therefore regardless of what they are called fly legally and respectfully
