Is there a subforum on this topic I should be posting to and/or searching?

I'm looking for others' experiences in getting their images printed into products appropriate for hanging on their walls and selling.

I would consider either a local shop near you or a on line printer like Bayphoto.com.

It depends on what print media and level of quality that you are looking for. Nations Photo Lab, Mpix and Printique are generally considered really good. I've had a few large prints made at Costco which I thought were good quality and priced very well. Unfortunately, they've contracted their business through Shutterfly now. If you want fast and affordable, you can try Amazon. I haven't used them but they seem to get good reviews.

If it's just prints, try Walgreens.com with 1 hour local pickup. There are often online discount. Most importantly, you need to start with really great high quality image files. I'm fortunate to have a Walgreen's only 1 mile away.

He's not talking about small prints if he wants hang them on the wall. I don't know if Walgreens does anything above 8x10.

Walgreens does more than just small prints. Check the web site if you really want to know what they offer.

It appears that anything larger than 8x10 is considered a poster rather than a print!

But is that available at local Walgreens or do you have to order them online? Also, when it comes to photos, you usually get what you pay for in terms of color replication and paper quality.

Printique.com always does a great job they are owned by Adorama I've ordered a lot of metal prints from them not cheap but very high quality. I also use millers on occasion for larger prints and wall art but you need to get set up as a professional photographer to use them I believe they have Mpix.com for non pros. I will say I have an epson P900 17'' Printer and I do really love printing my own and trying new papers

BayPhoto, MPix, Nations Photo Lab, Printique all good. Used to get a discount code when you open a new account, don't know if they still do. Most will drop ship in plain packaging so you don't have to ship it yourself. I'd suggest getting accounts with all of them because in addition to normal holiday sales, they run promotions from time to time during the year. You never know which one will have the best price at a given time.

I've been very happy with the print quality I get from Walgreens. Do you have information that their print quality is not good?

MPix is my favorite for high quality prints. I've used Walgreens and Walmart for quick prints but you get what pay for! for.

If you can afford it, get an Epson or Canon that prints tabloid size. It's nice being able to experiment with different papers, and have the ability to print tests without waiting.

For outsourcing prints, I'd look at at these guys: www.whitewall.com

A friend owns a 44-inch Canon printer. It costs him about $1300 to replace ink cartridges, which he can justify only because he's a graphic artist/photographer with decades of experience and a big client list. Intermittent users of relatively smaller color printers will still balk at manufacturers' ink prices (discount alternatives quickly fade because they aren't archival). My little Canon printer wasted huge volumes of ink going through its warmup and shutdown routines, and I finally said the hell with it.

Walgreen, Walmart, and other big-box photo services provide a decent product for the price, but output is regulated by an algorithm designed to produce average results over a wide range of anticipated exposure values. It's a one-size-fits-all approach. Such machines can't begin to match the carefully calibrated work of custom labs. The choice to use one kind of service vs. another depends on what a photographer thinks his or her customers are willing to tolerate in terms of quality. Discerning buyers can easily spot the difference.
