Best combo for firmware and app versions?

With all the discussions about firmware versions, I am just curious if the newest apps are backwards compatible with older firmware and what others think is the best combination of Drone / RC / Battery firmware & App version?

The word on the street is .700 drone/RC and iOS 4.0.8 are the best combo.
