DJI Mavic 2 confirmed by Argos (specs & model names)

Looks like the Mavic 2 Enterprise has been leaked too, this time allegedly from the DJI website itself:

Looks tall & chunky.

I am totally off the Enterprise rumor. I believe that if it existed, it would have been in the catalog.

I wonder if the two cameras would be interchangeable or do you have to buy both models? I can see the advantage of having both cameras. Perhaps a Super Bundle with the new Mavic and both cameras.

The gimbals look to be totally different. It may well be the same drone model but might require more than a simple at-home job to swap for most people.
Improved gimbal was my second most essential change from mavic 1 (behind a far better camera).

I doubt that'll be the case. The only thing that needs to be in the gimbal is the sensor and the lens, the rest of the electronics that make it a camera are inside the body. Different sensors will require different processors and software.

That's not to say that a removable camera module isn't possible, but I suspect it would result in a major redesign of the aircraft and it doesn't look like that's happened for the Mavic 2. If you watch a teardown of the original MP, the image and video processor chips, RAM etc. are on a board at the bottom of the aircraft along with the downward facing sensors. All of that would need to be relocated to the front end of the aircraft with the gimbal, and then the whole body would need to be rebalanced to allow for the now heavier front end to prevent the forward pair of motors from being overstressed compared to the rears. They'd likely need to reposition or redesign the forward obstacle avoidance cameras too. Not only that, but packaging this into a user-friendly removable module would create extra weight.

Yes, food for thought. Just hoping DJI planned for it with the weight distribution if the gimble/camera assembly can swap out between the two rather than alter manufacturing assembly of two different body configurations. This could open up doors to third party vendors like FLIR or alternate camera types to create their own gimble/camera modules.

It could be done via a separate board plugging into a common bus inside the drone (i suspect its likely, from a manufacturer point of view, the more you can keep the same the better for mass production). Makes sense for a potential "enterprise" expansion too.

That'll be a shop or specialised swap if possible at all though not something you can do at home for little or no cost.

Mega zoom advertisements would instantly ban them as surveillance devices and would make all the crazies think we all have mega zoom from 300ft up

Well I was rather trying to point out, that hypotetical 2x optical zoom lens on that 1" version need not to be too big, given it is only 2xzoom. I might be wrong though...

It would have to be substantially bigger and heavier than providing it on a smaller sensor. Light paths, focus issues and the area the image needs to cover have to be bigger. That means a bigger assembly and more size and more weight.
Engineering a 24-48 (lets not talk about 2x, its meaningless camera wise) on a 1 inch sensor is by nature going to be bigger and heavier than on a say a 2 inch or 2/3 inch.

Thats what i thought. The lead time on those catalogues is quite large - a few months. So cancelling an event a few weeks before release means they'd already been done.
And they're not going to spent huge sums of cash printing 100,000+ catalogues to change one page out of 800.

Pretty much confirmed the catalogue as true as well - DJI haven't denied it.

This whole thing is so weird. If you are DJI, why do you essentially let a product announcement be made by the release of a vendors advertisement? Did no one at DJI realize that the catalog was due to be released? Surely there were a warning from Argos.

You would think that DJI would make some kind of product release announcement the day before the catalog came out, if for no other reason than to be able to control the timing. The feature set must be complete, even if it all doesn't work yet. Weird.

Given lead times for things this was fairly sure to happen when they cancelled the press event last minute.
Review samples would already have been out, quite a lot of people will have articles written but held under NDAs. Businesses likely already pre-ordered stock and built their marketing campaigns.
Once all that was done its very difficult to put the cat back in the bag.

I cant see how DJI care anyway. OK so theres a mavic 2 range. Everyone knew one would appear this year. The competition is 2 + years behind so no issue there so from their point of view it makes near no difference that this has gone live.

Given the lack of supply issues with mavic, platinum and air i guess the delay is to make sure people can actually get the things before christmas.

Perhaps having the reveal come from Argos was deemed less damaging than whatever problem that caused the cancellation of the event.

Think about it, all DJI products before launch had some sort of leak. There have been a ton of rumors posted over the last 6+ months, many of them false. So, for DJI, this "leak":

A. A way to put some of the rumors to rest.
B. Creates "talk" about the product.
C. Gives them time to fix whatever issues they had that canceled the 7/18 event.
D. Halts Evo purchases for folks who want a 1" sensor.

Has anyone gotten a sense of the size of the MP2 vs the current MP?
Allegedly it is slightly bigger than the current Mavic Pro... that is just what all the rumors have been saying, and it would make sense: heavier camera and more sensors, combined with longer flight time equals bigger battery.

You don't want it too soon those. It might halt evo purchases from people that want to buy already obsolete tech but on the other hand it'll all but kill Mavic Pro and Platinum sales now.
