I wonder how this will affect the drones running older firmware? Probably no affect.

It depends on the type of GPS device used in the equipment. I currently work for a company that develops networking technology - we had to apply a firmware update to an older model radio system we use that pulls GPS signal. Most current tech based applications most likely will have no effect, or the company that developed it probably issued a fully tested update for it months ago. It's the GPS version of Y2K.

I hear ya. Probably best to not fly at 8PM EST today to see how many drones crash, or to do ground based testing only until you know how your drone deals with it when flying older firmware. I assume anything made after 2010 will probably be compliant, but I don't trust that 100% until I know for sure.
