has anyone ran into over heated batteries due to flying in southern states? I know you can’t leave your batteries in a car but when flying will the dark color of the Mavic cause an issue with the sun during mid day flights?

Never had an issue, even in 100+ degree (F) temps with countless flights, as long as the batteries aren't left in a hot car or for extended periods exposed to the hot sun on a hard surface (like placing an extra battery on rocks or concrete while flying with another battery, only to swap it out when ready).

can confirm, flown 3 batteries back to back multiple times in one hundred degree plus heat, let batteries cool in air conditioned car, charged them while driving, and flew the same 3 within a couple hours

There are a couple of notes in the Mavic Air Intelligent Flight Battery Safety Guidelines about batteries and heat. One note says that the battery shouldn't be used in environments above 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) and a second important one says that the battery shouldn't be charged in environments in excess of 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) and finally, the battery shouldn't be stored in environments above 40 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit).

The Mavic Air User Manual lists the operating temperature for our drones as 32 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit (0 to 40 degrees Celsius)

There's a good thread on the Mavic Pro on the subject with users personal experiences, photos, flights and heat mitigation techniques.

It's also worth mentioning that your motors will have to work harder to generate the same lift that they would get when it isn't as hot outside.Hotter air is less dense, which means it's more difficult to generate lift. Airplanes are actually grounded sometimes for this same reason.

From just breezing through some of the material, it looks like a small flight isn't going to instantly melt your UAV, but it might not be a good idea to plan any sustained outings.

Good luck!
