It's a good place to start, but there are a number of uncertainties in these calculations. Just to give some perspective, in many of these incidents the aircraft have been found within 100 m of the location estimated by that method.

Correct, and that helps because the smart autoland level was at 23% and the aircraft was only around 60 seconds from switching to autoland.

instead of sitting here worrying about what calculations were used.. I think I would be out on foot patrol looking in the location @sar104 provided.. his reputation of finding lost drones speaks for itself..

There's no simple formula - the method is best seen in the graph I posted. Here's an annotated version. The battery % is extrapolated to the landing battery %, giving a time at which it should start to autoland. The default descent rate is 3 m/s, so that allows us to estimate how long it will take to descend to ground level. Then, using an estimate of the drift rate as a function of altitude (linear from 500 m down to 0 m since the wind speed looks to be around 20 mph at low level), we can estimate how far downwind it will drift while descending.
