Mavic Photo Quality is AWFUL... Please help!

Ya so I'm not seeing any settings to change the resolution ether? So does it just always shoot at max res with stills?

Also why does when switched to photo the live video stream looks way less detailed!? When on video the live stream looks some much better!!!
Why is this?

Okay, well I found out from trial and error that the jpeg images have a much higher res than the RAW images... Not sure why this is, but if anyone is running into this problem, just switch to jpeg!

These are RAW previews. It's embedded so you can see thumbnails on a computer with OS that supports these previews.
If for example you load the image into Photoshop, Camera RAW will launch and you have full resolution and a ton of settings to adjust your photos. Next you either save the edited settings so next time you load the image the settings are applied or you open the RAW image in Photoshop. You will see that resolutions is on par with most 12 Mpix cameras. From there you can export the image in the format you choose like jpeg, png, etc.

Hi guys,
As I am looking around at everyone's footage from the Mavic, I'm noticing that the still photos that come off of mine are very low resolution compared to everyone else...

The resolution straight off the SD card is 960x720 shot in RAW. A few samples are attached to this thread.

If anyone can let me know what to do to resolve this, or confirm that this is normal, it'd be much appreciated!View attachment 5914 View attachment 5915

Even after doing that, the visual quality of the photo remains to be unusable. However, I have found that shooting in Jpeg yields much higher quality photos, so that is what I've been doing :D

You are doing something wrong then. Give us and example of the original copies one of your RAW files and the matching JPEG.

That's odd. But nevertheless okay if you are happy with the jpeg outcome. I don't now what color settings you are using. I'm using RAW for stills and have CineLike for color setting. It gives me enough room to not blow the highlights and I can lighten up the darkest shadows without introducing to much noise.
Normally working RAW you should get 1 stop more of dynamic range.

Okay so I'm a fairly new mavic owner and ran into the exact same issue when I went to take photos. Spent a full day researching and testing, here's how I fixed the issue:

1. Camera Reset
From the main live view screen in the DJI Go app, tap the settings button directly below the record/take photo button. Jump into the menu on the right hand side (3rd option to choose from), scroll down to the very bottom of the list and select "Canera Reset". This will do a full reset of the camera, wiping any settings or preferences you've previously adjusted (such as aspect ratios, colour profiles, file formats and image settings). Once the reset is complete, put all your setting back the way you like and attempt to take another image.

This fix is to overcome the software issue in the DJI Go app that interferes with the autofocus during still photo mode. Even though the camera says it's focussed once you tap the screen or press one of the buttons under the controller, it for whatever reason hasn't focussed, hence why the photos look unusable. Some users have reported the issue coming back after power cycling their mavic. If that happens, move onto fix #2.

2. Re-flash firmware
Download the DJI Assistant 2 desktop application and plug in your mavic via the micro USB port on the left hand side. Downgrade the firmware from the latest one you're running, then once it has completed, reinstall the latest firmware.

This is a more time consuming fix, but has fixed my issue and I haven't once had a problem with my camera mode since. Just to be safe, I also did a full factory reset while using the DJI Assisstant app to wipe any random settings that may have been activated by the previous user (I bought mine second hand).

Hope this helps!

If you use the 16:9 (photo) option it looks the same.
It's always been like that since Phantom Vision Plus.

gonna have to try 16:9 for photo live view always wondered why my photo live view has been so low quality

Hi,

can someone explain to me why I get good 12mp pics, but i also thumbnail low res pics. When i take pics i just want the 12mp pics not the low res. I seem to spend a lot of time deleting low res pics. Probably a silly question but hey lots to learn. Took this one I was happy with but also got copies of low res as well. Cheersorg_b295f1777b9216d0_1511449684000-EFFECTS.jpg

960x720 is the size of the thumbnail contained within the RAW file and does not reflect the real resolution of the RAW file.

Well… I “reset” the camera while connected to the drone and in the the DJI Fly app, but no joy.

Next, I plugged the drone into my computer, reset to factory, then reloaded the latest firmware. This, too, brought no joy.

Did I miss something? Thanks in advance!

You need to start from scratch and explain what the problem is in detail.
If you are saying that your raw images are only 960x720, that's not true.
No-one in this very old thread had any idea what they were talking about.
Post #36 points to the thing they all got wrong.

You need specialised software to read the dng files.
Without the specialised software, all you'll see is the 960x720 thumbnail jpg that's embedded in each dng image file.

Hi Meta4,

I've started looking at files with comparable camera resolution, like my old Canon 5D, which shoots a 4368 x 2912 (12.7MP) image in RAW (CR2).
That's only a bit larger in pixels than the Mavic which writes a 3992 x 2242 pixel image in RAW (DNG)... so I think I may have a focus issue with the Mavic, not a resolution issue.

My more recent images seem a bit soft.

... and before I forget, I use DNG files all the time and have "specialized" software... ;) no prob. BTW, I have never seen (much less used) the thumbnails, unless you mean the image preview on the controller...

Sorry to have wasted your time.

Happy and safe flying!
Phil
