MCUV and CPL filters - what are they for?

Just guessing here but the MCUV is probably a UV filter that some people use as a lens protector. It is supposed to cut ultraviolet light to improve hazy shots.

The CPL is probably a circular polarizing filter that is almost neutral.

Both of these would be good for stills but not useful to slow the shutter speed for video.

A multi-coated UV (MCUV) filter is most useful for protecting the camera lens. Polarizing filters can be used to cut down reflections on shiny surfaces like water.

I presume the CPL is only good for stills then as it had no stops?

The polarizing effect would work in videos too.

The polarizing effect works on both stills and video but will not add "darkness" to slow down the shutter speed in a video. If the video shutter speed is too fast it will not look smooth. The terms jittery or choppy are used to define this.

Thanks people. I assume we can't just get away with ND/PL. Is it best to own a set of ND AND ND/PL?

I got a set of Polar Pro for my MP that are both ND and polarizing.
