The Joy of Flight...

I know I'm not an amazing freestyle whatever yolo kind of pilot, but the DJI FPV has given me something that I had already when flying the Mavics, but got lost a bit in the desire to produce really nice photos and videos... the Joy of Flight!

I'm slowly getting used to flying the basic aerobatics manouvres, spend a lot of time in the sim, but don't dare go too close to obstacles yet. But still, I am enjoying every second of flying this little tasmanian devil!

Here's two little movies I hacked together of shots I made in the past couple of weeks. The first one was posted before, but as I hope to be making a series of "The joy of flight" films, (hopefully making some progress in the editing department as well), I thought I'd re-post #1 as well.

I felt like I was flying it with you. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Looks like you’re enjoying the joy of flight. Little else as cool. I did notice your technique progression in the 2nd one. Have fun. We all need more of it. Interested how #3 will turn out. Godspeed

So... here's part three: Drono Ludens, the playful drone!

Finally I found the courage to go fly in between obstacles instead of high above them! Seeing the movie on a bogger screen makes me realize I need to become a lot smoother still, but I'd say there's progress!

Are you flying full acro there, or the halfway between usual DJI and acro ?

Not sure what you mean with your question tbh, I was flying in full manual, without any limitations. Did not change anything on the rates though.

I only know a little of what I've read briefly about the DJI FPV drone.

It can be easy flying like their regular consumer drones to date, full manual like a regular handbuilt FPV drone, or (I think) a halfway between those 2 somewhere in the middle ??

Reviews basically said it's an easier way to transition between what most of us fly here on the forum, and full FPV style drone.

Ah, ok! Yes, it can be flown in 3 settings; Normal, Sport and Manual.

In normal mode, the drone will hold attitude, altitude and position. Controls will be Fwd/Aft/Strafe left/Strafe right, Up/Down/Yaw left/Yaw right. It will use obstacle avoidance to slow down when obstacles are detected. Speeds are limited.

Sport mode is comparable, but the obstacle avoidance doesn’t work, and the speed limits are much higher.

In manual mode, it flies like an fpv drone. By default, there are limits to the maximum pitch and roll angles, but you can switch those off in order to do a bit of acro.

In addition to this, there is the “escape” button which can be pressed at all times, which will automatically bring the drone to a hover as quickly as possible. Also, there is an RTH function which can be pressed at all times.

During all the flights in this latest movie, I flew in manual mode without angle limitations.

I believe that you are referring to Angle mode. That is a mode that is pretty standard on "traditional" FPV drones. It closely resembles what the new DJI FPV does when flying in Manual mode without unlocking angle limits. Once the limits are unlocked...Manual is full acro

Ah, so basically a regular DJI consumer drone we all know and love, with the extra full manual FPV mode.
Awesome.
Always thought trad FPV was a little risky with doing long cinematic type flights, but having OA and RTH is brilliant with the escape button adding to the safety factor.

I might even consider this myself, the old Spark and M1P, while both perfect, love 'em, extensive kit for both, I have been (greatly) tempted by FPV for quite a while.
This seems to be a perfect transition drone, which I think is one of the main selling points used by DJI.

So last week was the king's birthday, which is a national holiday in the Netherlands. Normally, the entire country is one big festival and an absolute blast, but this year almost all festivities were cancelled due to Covid. The weather was great though, so excellent opportunity to put the drones in the air! This time I brought both the Mavic 2 Pro and the FPV to have some fun.

In the Netherlands, we used to be at war with the Spanish back in the 80-year war in the 15the century. During that time, a defense system was created of lines of fortresses and fortified towns, most of them with a very recognizable star shape. Many of these fortresses and towns still exist, and they make for very photogenic items in the landscape. Whilst not being the main subject, one of these towns can be seen in my new movie, "The joy of flight Vol 4"!

Flying at this location and editing this movie was a lot of fun, there is just something special about sitting outside in the sunshine and letting your drone fly!

I ended up watching JOF #4 prior to see #3. You seem to pump them out faster that I can see them. Lol. I enjoyed #3 and still loving your little drone across the screen at the end of each shoot. A signature in its own right. What I enjoyed most is watching #3 and having already seen #4, how much smoother and deliberate you flew on JOF #4. Getting better and more confident is simply cool and it shows. I’ll try to fly in your footsteps. Or follow in them ??Godspeed
