It just wasn't a common feature at the time that drone was developed. If you want more sensors, you can upgrade to the Mavic 2. It has omnidirectional obstacle sensing.
It might be handy for (mostly auto, loss of signal) RTH if possibly under tree canopy for example, as long as canopy is detectable and not too fine.
Is there another reason(s) to have vertical obstacle sensors ?
Of course if planning such a flight I'd set to hover and be very close by, but sometimes you see a spot and think I'll just duck through there for a look.
M2P(Z) has other sensors, but only in Tripod mode ?
