Forced, sneaky updates preventing flying

LoL I got the firmware update in the DJI Go 4 App, but I was still able to fly without upgrade...
Are you using iOS or android? (I'm on iOS)

I don't think Apple allows apps to do internal updates without the users consent. This a case when the openness of android bites you in the butt.

I NEVER WANT TO BE PREVENTED FROM FLYING EVER AGAIN BECAUSE OF FIRMWARE UPGRADES OR NOT HAVING THE INTERNET.

Hot-patch NFZ geofencing data updates are a fact of life for all prefab drone makers since they crashed on the White House lawn years ago.

Get over it, or build your own from scratch.

You remind me of those guys in South Park. The pissed off and angry party, lol

I raised a reasonable concern about a product which I love by the way. You are talking about North Korea and South Park. I don't know if you're young or have had too much coffee.

Seriously though you sound like a whining b$%^.

Every day I feel more like an extra in the movie Idiocracy.

We haven't actually established in this thread for a fact that DJI actually requires everyone to connect their aircraft to the internet every once in a while. In my case, what seems to be a fact is that it checked for firmware upgrades in the background (whether the DJI Go app or a DJI Go Android service I don't know).

But let's assume that is the case and all DJI copters need to be connected to the internet every once in a while. Then be open about it. That simple. Don't make the app block entering the camera or use it. Say there's a firmware upgrade and it's mandatory. See how that's much different?

At least I would know whether this periodic internet thing is a requirement or not and if it is, how much time the period is.

If the company were to go broke, would that effectively turn my Mavic into a paper weight in 30 days? I don't know about you guys, that piece of information is relevant to me.

(...) my overall impression I got from years of using it is that apps can set hooks to certain events and will re-launch automatically and I would have to keep checking if it is running and stopping it.

If you go to Application Manager in Settings and find DJI GO, I think you can say "Force Stop" and make it not run in the background until you next connect it to your controller. Even if you reboot your Samsung, the only way a force-stopped DJI Go will start again is if it gets opened by you or by the controller. (I found this out when trying to mitigate some battery drain issues when Go runs in the background on my Note 4 phone. Confirmed in that I run Litchi and Go 4 on the same phone, just one at a time with the other one force-stopped.)

Update: I've had the "can't tap on Go Fly" problem again. But this time rebooting the tablet solved the problem. Really weird.

it's this kind of crap that has put me off ANY new dji purchase. i'll wait with my hacked mavic until another company catches up. as much as i like the mavic 2 specs - i won't buy one.
yup when "nld" drones confirms their app works i will pull the trigger, until then ill read the "woe is me i updated threads" haha

Basically, anything new from DJI is going to be hobbled, relative to the AC. started at anything after .700 ac firmware, still old .400 from the opening of the box 1.5 years ago.

sadly i have had litchi pecker me out of flights with the same stuff. last time was a samsung upgrade. with litchi i get a thing that says you have a unverified version of litchi or some thing like that and i have to get on the internet and reinstall litchi to get it to work again. if you happen to be standing on top of a 4,000' mount you just climbed to fly off of it can be annoying. really annoying for a app i paid for because djigo wont work right. i have the same s-2 tablet flashing usb thing too. have a look at no limit dronz. persistence and determination are omnipotent.

Get a dedicated tablet just for DJI GO4. Keep it offline after side loading an earlier version of firmware and or DJI GO4.

This is one thing that I liked about my Typhoon H. It was a closed system. No phoning home.

Dang, I don't think I've ever clicked "like" so many times in one thread! You guys are spot on.

Regards,

Kevin

p.s.
Very happy with my .700 firmware, just wish my "approved Samsung S7" would go for more than 5 or 10 minutes without crashing, and if I were the "big cheese" at DJI, the android developers would be pushing mops and emptying garbage cans, if not escorted off the premises with a large boot print.
