Afternoon all,
After a lifetime of aeromodelling RC Heli's, Fixed wing, Control line, Free flight, I have decided it's time to try drones, for pleasure only.
I am looking at buying a 2nd hand Mavic Mini for starters, going to look at one next week, the guy is on holiday this week. I'll let you know when and if. Maybe a pic or 2.

Welcome
Check the prices of completed auctions on eBay first.
Run a search for "Mavic Mini combo" on eBay, once the search has finish click on the "advanced" button ( to the right of the search button ) then tick the "completed item" box and run the search again.
Green prices sold.

You DO NOT need the drone to instal and test the control app "FLY App" on your phone. So, ASAP i.e. NOW, check your phone is compatible, some are not.
Go to
DJI Fly - Download Center - DJI
download the app and try to instal it.
With a windows computer and an android phone I do this by downloading the App to computer and then copy the app via USB cable to the download folder in the phone. I then instal the app from that folder. I don't rememeber if the app can be downloaded to the phone directly from the DJI web site.

For reference, for Android I have also downloaded older versions of the App from Download DJI Fly APKs for Android - APKMirror

If you are using a iPhone then I think you are stuck with whatever version is currently available from either DJI or possibly the Apple store.

If you are on an Android phone be aware the App is NO LONGER in the play store and ANY other apps in there with similar names ARE NOT the genuine thing, the App is FREE from DJI etc..
It needs a 64bit phone and even with a 64bit phone some versions of Android may not like the App. Testing/checking is advisable.
You will probably have to "allow installation from unknown locations" or some such wording, but on the authorisation page ENSURE that the "one time only" or some such wording box is ticked BEFORE you authorise the instal.

WELCOME to the forum.

After flying non-Flight Controlled Aircraft you'll find flying today's UAS a walk in the park. In fact, in some instances it can get downright boring if it weren't for the camera on the UAS to enhance the experience. For me, flying the Drone isn't satisfying like flying a Planks and Heli are but the flying camera, incredible camera stabilization, and ability to fly autonomously definite add to the enjoyment a lot.

Welcome from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, USA. We have a Member's Map in the Upper Right of the Title Bar. Click on "Members" and then Click on "Member's Map…" Check it out and you might find some new flying friends.

Since you live in the UK, there are specific laws and rules for you to follow, Since you already fly RC, all of these requirements may have been met… You may have to register your new drone; maybe not, it's under 250 grams…

Even if you have flown RC aircraft before, before, here is some Good Old Fashion Advice…

First off, watch some YouTube videos on buy used quadcopters (especially DJI Minis…) to learn what to look for and what to lookout for…

You will pay a lot of money for that Drone, put your phone number on it. If your drone gets lost or stuck in a tree and it finally comes down when you are not around, give the finders an opportunity to contact you so it can be returned.

Now, for the Fun Part, But do not let the excitement of the moment get the best of you. When you are going out to fly, do it slowly and deliberately. Get used to a set procedure and even practice it.

There are so many things I could write but these are the highlights that I feel need mentioning.

Plug in your phone/tablet into your controller; turn on the Controller and DJI Fly App (if it does not start on its own…). On the Drone, open the front legs, then open the back legs, and then remove the Gimbal Cover.

The Gimbal is the most delicate item on the Drone and banging or bumping can damage it. I also fastened a short "Remove Before Flight" ribbon to the cover so it's more noticeable and I do not forget to remove it…

Turn on the drone and watch it come to "life." Watching the Gimbal go through its self-check is almost like watching a puppy or kitten opening its eyes for the first time…

Place the drone down (preferably on a Landing Pad) while it finishes its self-test (collecting satellites, etc…).

Check your battery status (Phone, Drone, and Controller), check the Signal Strength, by now the Controller should have reported it updated the Home Point.

Lift off, 6 feet (2-meters) or so, hover a bit, check the controls (move the drone a bit forward, back, left, right, yaw left and right). By now, your Controller will probably report again, "Home point Updated."

If you go out in a rush and race thru your start up and take off before the drone has finished it prep, it may update its Home Point over that pond or that old tree you are flying over and in your excitement, you'll fly the drone long past it Low Battery point and when it engages Return to Home and lands in the pond or in a tree; it will be all on you…

Now go have fun, learn to fly the drone by sight before you try to fly it out a distance depending on the video feed, FPV.

I would also advise you to use YouTube and watch a lot of the Videos on flying and setting up the Drone. When it is too dark, too cold, or too wet, you can "fly it vicariously" through YouTube. Also watch some of the Blooper Drone Videos and learn how not to fly your "New Baby."

Below is the link to all of the downloads offered by DJI for the Mini, including the User Manual.

After you read the Manual, read it again, you will be surprised what you missed the first time and you will be better prepared for that first "scary moment…"

Fly On and Fly Safe…

Welcome to Mavic Pilots! :) Enjoy the forum!Thumbswayup

Thanks for your replies and advice. All taken on board.

I have already got the BMFA CoC and pilot ID as I put the ID on all my RC craft.
I have A certificates in Heli & FW, I must do my B's. Maybe next summer.

I flew Heli's for about 15 or so years from a 30 size Shuttle with mechanical Futaba gyro (who remebers them whirling around under the canopy) to 90 Robbe Cuatro nad then onto 60 & 90 scale.

I started aeromodelling at the tender age of 11 back in 1971, I'm not a great fan of electric but do have a couple of fixed wing electrics inc. a foam spitfire but, I like all forms especially if its got an IC engine. I also compete in control line combat with 3.2cc diesel engines, smelly, oily stuff. 😆

I think the drones that are now available have amazing technology built in. I will enjoy flying it and mostly for the pics and vids.

I may have a Mini 2 this afternoon, going to view later. I'll keep ya'all posted.
