The Part 107 Exam isn't as hard as you may think. You need a 70% to Pass it.

I took the FAAs part 107 sample exam yesterday. I never formally studied for it. I just picked up information as I needed as a Recreational Pilot over the last 2 years. Most information gathered was from Forums (like this one), the FAA guidelines themselves, Legal/law websites and Youtube Videos. I passed it with 80%. You ONLY need 70% to pass. I guess I'll go ahead and sign up for the real thing, but considering it costs around 150 US dollars, I'm going to read the FAA study guide before I take it. I don't want to waist over 100 dollars, if I were to fail.

Most of the better firms for a 107 have a pass guarantee, so even if you fail the first time, you will continue to receive lifetime support. You will know which areas of the test you are deficient in, just like you should now...so that is the area of study you should focus more on in the online classes.

I have never heard of anyone failing twice, but then again..I doubt anyone would admit it. I took two weeks to study with a online class, it cost me $105...I got a 97 I believe, (Been a bit) but I am a private pilot (or was)...I recently took my 107 recurrent exam (required every two years)...using same class instruction from same place...got a 100%. So yeah..some people are born with it, and some like me need school/classes. The choice is yours, but I would say with a bit more regular study as you have been, with a bit more focus on the topics/questions missed, you will probably pass fine...best of luck.

The bigger thing is are you understanding the different subject areas or just doing "cliff" notes for a exam? Online classes will pretty much drive home the fields of study as knowledge remembered/understood..but again your choice..passing is passing I guess.

I used a lot of free resources to study and took a lot of practice tests, always getting scores above 90. When I took the real test in April, it was a lot tougher than I expected. Questions were worded differently, different airports were used for the sectional chart questions, etc. It is important to really understand the material, as they have ways to frame the questions that make the answer a bit less obvious.
Fun little story on he cost (for me it was $96 in Virginia). Armed with my email temporary certificate, I went to a local winery to shoot some photos and video at their spring seafood festival. The guy running the oyster food truck asked me a few questions about the drone, then told me to see him after the mission and he'd fix me up with lunch. When all was said and done, he provided lunch for my wife and me AND dropped me a t - shirt to boot. Total value of food and merch was $78, which just about covered cost of the test. This would have been completely illegal as a recreational pilot. I had decided to get the 107 for exactly circumstances an opportunities like this.

As a pilot and flight instructor yes the test was easy and the 107 regs were the key learning area. It is very attainable for a non-pilot but it is much more study and learning. A non-pilot may wish to go to a reputable company and take there "guaranteed course". Some prefer the self study so whatever works. 90% of 107 test should be a walk in the park for a current pilot as long as they study the regs inside an out. I go back far enough that the 10 FAA written (ha ha there I go dating myself....Written? What the heck is a written?) exams were free through the FAA!!

R2TheTroll, That is and old school saying. I never ever treated the minimum as a goal. I have been a flight instructor since 1987 and I would never allow a student to do so either. They need my endorsement to take the knowledge test (written exam) so they had to prove they knew their stuff. I LOVE your second sentence which is SO SO true. It is not your back side in an airplane that is at risk with a drone. It is your liability and also hard earned money!!

This forum has been a great resource for me. Having flown drones on and off for ten years, it has helped me catch up with the new and more sophisticated technology, not available with my first DJI Phantom.

Here is my list of practice tests and videos I watched while preping for my FAA Part 107 exam. I took my exam April 7th, one day after the FAA added the new night flight and fly over crowds categories. I passed with an 85%, missing a couple of the new questions.

It took 6 weeks to get my certification number which allowed me to take the Part 107 sUAS Recurrent – Non-61 Pilots. Took and passed this exam this week. It's now free and lets you fly at night and over folks when certain conditions are met. The recurrent exam had 45 questions. I wanted to take it as soon as I was eligible while I still remembered things I had studied. On the first pass only missed 3 questions, then they let you go back and try to get those 3 correct again, which I did as you must get 100%. On a side note, I'll be 80 next month, so for you older folks it's doable. Good Luck!

Everybody’s preferred learning style is going to be a little different. Many people like to study on their own reading FAA documents; this can work. Other people like self-paced video lessons. Free stuff on Youtube. A combination of all these. Quizzing with practice tests builds confidence. Others find their best learning opportunity in a classroom with others. All these approaches are legit!

I’ve read so many times “you don’t need to take a course, look, I passed!” It‘s OK to take a course, or not, follow your own sense of what will work best for your learning!

I went the self-study route in 2018. I passed the initial with a 91%. In 2020, my re-current was 97%. But the information provided on this thread is wonderful as not everyone has the same learning ability and retention as another. Some, including myself, at times, need additional help.

Beware the actual exam is not like the study exam and is trickier. Be sure you know sectional charts real well, unless you study how to read them you will likely fail. Charts are one thing you can't guess at. I took a course https://drone.flightready.net/remote-pilot-ground-school for $89 and studied for at least a month and don't think I could have passed without it. Some questions on the 107 test seem like they have 2 correct answers so beware.
