DJI Mavic, Air and Mini Drones

Bought and Tested the DJI RC Plus on Ebay that claims to work with the Mavic series of Drones. Guess What? IT DOES WORK! I'll tell you why.

I mean, if you're going to completely ignore the evidence I've given,

You haven't given any.

You've cited neutral facts, like hardware similarities and the lack of these implementations supporting the same drones, then offered your interpretation of these facts as evidence these differences are because of a strategy to increase sales by forcing customers to buy hardware they don't really need.

That's a theory, not evidence. I've offered a different theory – support ROI – that's every bit as valid, and supported by your facts.

I mean, if you're going to completely ignore the evidence I've given, and repeat an argument that I've debunked, I guess yeah we're going to have to disagree. Which is all good, the point of this thread is to discuss how good this controller is and how well it works with the Mavic 3 Pro and Mini 3 Pro and other supposedly incompatible drones. And hopefully to figure out how the seller loads on the firmware so we can make it work with all the other artificially locked out drones. You're the one who tried to hijack the discussion into some other mostly irrelevant and definitely useless area because OMG you've worked in tech. But hey you have a nice day!

Your insincerity in that last sentence was not missed 🙄

Your insincerity in that last sentence was not missed 🙄

And I toned it down! You should hear what I really think of your endless feuding, here and in other threads. Good lord.

Anyway hopefully you haven't completely derailed the useful discussion about unlocking the potential of the Plus controller.

Now as they used to say when suffering a certain kind of person, good day to you sir!

Hi wrybread,

my Name is Detlef I´m from Germany, I read your post above the controller here and this is super!
My question, can you select the language in English, German?
I buy on now by Ebay and I hope it come next week. Are you happy this your controller?
I have also a Mavic 3 pro, but the original controller feeling so cheap.
I can not understand that DJI gives such a cheap control for a drone that costs over 2000€!
I have now bought the RC Pro, which is more suited to the Mavic 3 Pro. Now I'm waiting for the DJI RC Plus and hope it arrives here next week.
I also fly with the DJI RC Plus here at the Johanniter Unfallhilfe in the drone squadron, the controls are just great!
The hardware of the RC Pro is almost identical except for the smaller display, less memory and housing, fixed antennas, I'm curious to see how it works with the DJI Fly. Of course the RC Plus has one. 7 inch screen, which is why I'm switching from the Pro to the Plus.
I'm curious!
Best Regards
Detlef

Yup just tested, I was able to change the language to German.

Go to Settings > System > Languages & Input > Languages, then I had to click "add a language" since German wasn't on the list, and after it was on the list I had to drag it to the top.

All settings and DJI Fly were then in German.

As soon as my Rc Plus arrives, I will of course give feedback, thank you very much.

Well, I jumped on this bandwagon yesterday. I'm not concerned with the non-working buttons. They're not on my RC Pro, so I won't miss 'em. But am really looking forward to the larger and a little brighter screen

Yes, I think that the buttons that are also not available on the Pro do not bother, but there is the brighter and larger screen 😀

The control is open, you can install some apps that you want to install via apk. I have google search installed by voice control, really wonderful. Firefox and Google are integrated. Also the pairing with my Mavic 3 Pro was very fast. For 520€ a bargain!

Hello everyone,
I have now flown with my controller and have to say, top! Even in bright sunshine you can see the display perfectly, all in all a great investment, I can only recommend it to everyone!

I'm amazed by the ability to see it in bright sunshine. I can't remember if I posted it here, but I picked up this sunshade, it helps even more:

It's also nice for protecting the joysticks during transport. Now I just slip the controller into this stylin old camera case from a thriftshop, fits the controller absolutely perfectly, love it:

And external hot swappable battery! With the battery installed I never really think about charge levels of the controller, I just use it for days and it still has 3 bars. Highly recommended accessory:

⚠️ Help from the experts!

Our small volunteer fire department has 2 Mavic-3 (original model) drones and chose the RC-Plus controller from eBay.
I know…. The Plus is not compatible with “Fly” app and the Mavic-3.
These 2 controllers were “modified” and came from a Chinese eBay seller that no longer exists on eBay.

They seemed perfect for us. We had a zero budget, yet we wanted the large & bright display, etc..
ESPECIALLY the removable antennas which allow easy mounting of the Alientech antenna/amp system. We took up a collection among the drone folk on the department and were able to buy the two controllers at a cost of $850@. I did see they are selling for less now.

The dilemma?
As many here have mentioned, the firmware must not be updated or it becomes unusable.
I’m guessing the “modification” was to flash the controller with the RC-Pro firmware, allowing the “Fly” app to run properly.? Under the settings for the controller, it indicates it is an RC-Pro .

Well, the RC-Plus controllers were working perfectly UNTIL the “Firmware Update Available - Click to install”.
I will confess… it was me. 🙄 I clicked it out of habit.
Now the controller will boot up and load the “Fly” app, but it won’t bind to any of our drones or my personally owned Air-2s and Mavic-3 Pro.

Additionally, the far left battery LED flashes alternating red and yellow.

The RC-Plus runs Android 10 according to the settings info.
Before becoming unreachable, the eBay seller wouldn’t provide any info and stated: “you were warned not to update FW”.

We were desperate to get it functioning again because we only had an old RCN1 controller available during a high volume of wildfires and brush fires in our area. (using the Alientech Duo-3 antenna/amp assisted in range, nothing like they claim, but definitely an improvement).

Tip: Alientech sells a “bar” adapter that replaces the removable antennas and provides 2x QMA external RF connectors. I also made up 2 sets of “extension cables” to allow us to mount the Alientech Duo-3 to a tripod to get the extra height. 8’ and 15’ length / RG-400 for the 8’ and RG-223 for the 15’ cables. The Alientech Duo-2 and Duo-3 have a 1/4x20 threaded mount on the bottom and mounts directly to the “adapter bar” device (only $80 bucks - much easier and less expensive than opening up an RC-Pro and modifying to add external RF connectors)

In addition to the Alientech stuff, we purchased Lifthor brand tripod mounting kits. They are impressive quality devices and offer a “quick release” that permits the use of a tripod to hold the controller. Ideal for public safety or inspection use.

Sorry.. gadget advertisement over, LOL -back to the critical problem…

In the system settings, the FW version now shows it’s one version newer than the still functioning RC-Plus.

I tried to “restore” the controller under the system settings of the controller. No luck.

I also tried using DJI Assistant to reflash the controller with the same FW version that it was running prior to the update.
(there is a site that archives all of the DJI firmware files for most products). No luck with this either.

So, we are really stuck.

Is there any type of tool or utility that would allow us to “clone” the system from the second and still functioning RC-Plus? I’m Android clueless, but in the Windows world, there are tools that will allow you to “clone” bare metal running system o/s installation and whatever additional data/applications/etc is desired.

I’d also gladly pay for tech assistance from anyone with the skills to help me to get this functioning again.
I gave the dept my RC-Pro to use until I get the problem resolved. I feel just awful and need to correct my error.
Thanks in advance!

btw : For anyone who owns one of these modified RC-Plus controllers:

As far as I can tell, there is NOT a way to eliminate the “auto update” prompts. You CAN disable the updates to the “Fly” app, but that seems to be a function that is safe to execute and the seller had advised that updating the “Fly” app is safe. (But, please don’t hate me if it fails - no guarantees!!) The firmware update prompt keeps coming back each time the controller boots. What I have had good luck with is CAREFULLY sliding the “update FW”prompt at the main “Fly” app screen to the RIGHT. It disappears and seems to still be working to hide the prompt after 4 days now.

Also, for those who recommended the hot swappable internal 57 battery, THANK YOU! They are a lifesaver and work incredibly well. We have one per controller and leave them in place for extra capacity. The controller charges the primary battery first, then it WILL charge the removable battery. We intend on eventually buying a few more and a USB C type charging device for them. It’s much easier than what I do with my RC-Pro.
I use a USB-C battery bank with PD and a 6’ cable. It is always getting in the way.

Also, I believe that the internal battery that comes with the RC-Plus is significantly higher in capacity than the RC-Pro.

Thank you.

That's strange, I haven't ever been prompted to update the firmware with my Plus. At least I don't think I have? Maybe there's a little "update the firmware" link somewhere but I don't think I've even noticed it.

It sure would be nice to figure out how to flash the Pro firmware on it ourselves. Imaging the device is an interesting idea, but oddly I haven't heard of a way to image an Android device. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist of course, but transferring settings between Android phones for example does it piecemeal as opposed to just doing an image as I think iPhones do.

You might try reaching out to the various sellers of modified Plus's on eBay? Maybe one will do it for a fee? Or maybe you'll get lucky and one will tell you how to do it, also possibly for a fee? I'd also looking for a forum or subreddit that focuses on hacking drone hardware.

And confirmed, can update DJI Fly since that's just an app.

Very interesting about the Alientech signal booster.

Hello, to update, deactivate the check mark for automatic updates in the firmware profile. When I go to Check firmware update, a new firmware for the controller is displayed, cancel this. No message appears when I start the controller, I have tried it several times.
Best regards
Detlef

@rbad
the Autoupdate you must switch off in your profile for the Controller, not in the flight app!

Sorry i'm wrong, it is in the flight app🙈
