If you have an Air3 are you going to upgrade to Air3S?

So who ordered?
lol, I'm waiting for Amazon and some reviews with research before I pull the trigger if anything the Mavic 3 original release has made me really want a update post release as well (or two/three).

It turns out that the Air 3s does not have a variable aperture, (very disappointing) so I'll not be getting it. I'm sorry to have said it was supposed to as I had been misinformed. I'll wait to see what the Mavic 4 has to offer and the price. I may pick up a Mavic 3 Pro as the prices come down.

So "both cameras will have the same aperture f1.8" means adjustable aperture? :D
I got this from DJI Website

And there is nothing wrong with that. If you're happy with the drone you have, good. But as you said, those of us who are professional drone pilots and photographers have to stay updated to remain competitive. Our clients expect the best; sometimes upgrading equipment is necessary to deliver the best. My Air 3 does a great job but the 1" censor and variable aperture with the Air 3s is a game changer.
Totally agree, and I believe I said that in my post. I’m just saying that maybe recreational flyers would like better connectivity, or battery life or other features besides a golly gee, oh wow, super awesome camera. It’s the comparison I make with Apple iPhones. I’m not looking to make a Hollywood movie on my phone, but that’s what Apple “thinks” everybody wants.

read the specs -- no variable aperture

I’m going to hold with my Air 2S and Air 3. They give me all I need in flying and photography. Also, two drones are enough for me…how greedy can one get? 🧐

🇨🇦👍
If owning more than two drones is greedy then I guess my soul is lost to eternal darkness! 😂😂

I really am thinking from a camera perspective only but if the front Lidar means anything to you then albeit...

  • Main camera
    • 1-inch CMOS, 50 MP, f/1.8 (vs 1/1.3-inch, 48 MP, f/1.7)
    • Slo-motion 4K/120fps (vs 1080p/120fps)
  • Telephoto
    • 70mm, f/2.8, 48 MP

I'm not upgrading as much as adding the 3s to my "fleet". I always have two drones with me on a shoot. The ability to use my Air 3 batteries with the 3s makes flying for longer periods without charging is a real bonus.

You hit the nail on the head for me too... I did lose an air2s due to holding onto a air2 battery too long though lol

If I can buy just a bare unit then maybe, at the moment only the upgrade I would use is the lidar, the smaller sensor not a problem really still get great shots, some other upgrades could be added to the Air3 by future updates like the tracking and file transfer while not powered up

I am probably in the sweet spot for DJI's target audience for this particular model.

I'm a complete newbie. My goal is to become skilled enough on a lower- or mid-level drone so that I can graduate up to higher end units with thermal capabilities, and help with volunteer search and rescue work in the mountains of northern Idaho – where I live.

The Air 3s ticks all the boxes of the mini line but with better camera capabilities and obstacle avoidance, which is very important in the dense forests up here.

I've seen video footage of the Air 3S against the Mavic Pro 3 that was also pretty compelling for a non-professional user. Correct me if I'm wrong, but battery life and range appear to be better with the Air 3S over the Mavic Pro.

For these and a few other reasons, the Air 3S seemed to provide a good starting point to build up my skill set before spending up to $10K+ for the Mavic or Matrice Thermal units.

I also purchased the DJI Care Refresh 2-Year Plan, which gives me some comfort. ;)
